Title: Joy of riding a Savage
Post by Polar_Pilot on 09/26/07 at 19:03:51

Yesterday I had to do a ride of about 100 kms through open country side.
As I putted along at about 80 kmph - the utter joy of cruising along on a fine thumping motorcycle totally overwhelmed me
What a life - we get to ride and smile and be utterly happy -
If we did not have the Savage we would have to invent it!

Hurrah for motorcycles and the Savage in particular
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yup!

It's all about the smiles per gallon -- and nothing gets more than a thumper!

:) ;) :D ;D

80 km/h = 50 mph . . . . Thumper really likes that speed.  Rode the 153 miles from Parker AZ to North Palm Springs CA, mostly 50mph, took on less than 2.2 gallons of gasoline.

Good thing our speed limit is 50 mph!
I have a tendency to go slightly faster though, not much!

I just got back from a ride up the Lake Huron shore.
Beautiful day!
Started out cloudy and 57 degrees, then the sun came out and it went up to 67 degrees.
The trees are turning beautiful colors, the air was crisp and fresh, and there was very little traffic.
Best of all, the bugs are gone.  ;D
What a day to ride, breath deep, and just feel alive all over!

No doubt about it, the drone of a slow paced thumper is a true pleasure. I've had all sort of bikes make me smile, including really zingy two-strokes that can make you giddy with excitement. But there is a contentment and relaxation that only a four stroke single can give. Depending on the road, preferably remote, I can find my 'zone' at any of several speeds that the 99 likes to travel. 30-35mph in third is nice on shady country lanes. 50-55mph out on the narrow two lane blacktop from small town to small town. Or I've even found that the 99 has a sweet spot singing along right about 70mph on the big slabs, but I prefer to avoid them most of the time. Indeed, life is good one Putt at a time! ;D    8)

My 06 is also very happy at around 45-55 on a mild twisty country road.  It is also happy on the superslabs at around 65-70 while it smiles at the "big boys" telling them "I am getting over 60 MPG!!!" ;D 8)

Yeah, just got to chime in here ….. there’s many an occasion when the Savage makes me crack a grin and take the long way in to work.  I got it as a round town commute-scoot appliance without much thought to any fun personality lurking underneath.  After all, it’s a pretty basic bike with no stand-out feature.  Yet somehow the whole works much better than the sum of its parts would indicate.  My sweet spot is also 65 - 70 laid back on the freeway with the SuperTrapp rapping and that big jug on the boil.  I’ve been a single fan for more than 40 years but my old Velocette and Matchless 500’s would wear me down fast at that speed with their relentless jackhammer pounding.  The Savage counterbalancer indeed makes single life much more bearable.

My darn bike is down for the count more often than running, but when it is running, I could ride all day long. I haven't got it much over 55 yet, but it rides real nice up to that. As soon as I trust it to go more than a mile from home, I'll be hitting the road.

Nice to see you back. Finally got Ol' Yeller back together huh?

Didn't I see you hanging out at Intruder Alert a while back?

Ah man, I am realy needing to get Rex back together and hit the road again.  Last year was a joy when I was able to get out most every morning for a ride...even made some new friends at a Mac D's over in a town about 30 miles away.  They are a small group of old farmers who meet every morning for breakfast or maybe just some coffee.  Mostly WWII vets.  A fine bunch of fella's.  But it was the ride over there and back, or round about here and there depending on what road caught my attention.  It is really interesting finding out where some of the country roads end up taking you...many surprises along the way and a whole lot of fun.
The easy cruise at 55-65 mph was so relaxing...it is good for the soul.

I ride almost everyday to work and back which even still makes me smile, but yesterday I  had the day off with the house to myself so I decided to go on a longer then work and back run.  Called a couple friends but everyone was busy so I set out for a solo date.  Ran just a quick 67 miles through eastern Nebraska south of Omaha.  As if having a quite house to myself wasn't good enough, taking the ride made my day that much better.  Would have kept going past the house but I hadn't started my honey do list yet which went by that much quicker and better also.

Couldn't agree more!!!
Part of the blast of my trip was shocking people with my bike!
"What the hell is that?" I heard so often.
It's amazing how many people didn't know this bike existed, and, the ones that knew about bikes said "I bet that's a blast to ride"

...It sure is.

Been riding my Savage to and from work for just over a year now. It's amazing how fast your troubles at work fade away on this thing! In fact its pretty hard to have a bad day when your riding. The only thing I notice is that sometimes there's something wrong with the steering right about the time I try to turn into work's parking lot. It's all I can do to get it to turn! But it always goes away as soon as I'm headed home. I think Thumpers just have better sense than their owners! ;D

I know what you mean.  Mine bites me hard on the a$$ when I shut her off and I can barely walk into work.  Of course I tell the boss it's my back and can't bend over to save my life and stagger about all day.  But come quiting time, I leap over the desk, slide down the stairs and run over and start ol shedder up and take the long way home.  She's so happy she just purrs into the driveway.  But she does pout when I shut her down, and mew mournfully as I walk away.

I love my Savage, I have an '06 C-50 sitting beside her in the garage & if I'm wanting to have fun the Savage is the one I ride. Hubby asked why I got the "Big Boy" if I was going to ride the Savage, told him it was more fun and blew his mind ;)

Yesterday was the first time I had the little 06 Suzi out for a good ride in a few months.  Beside the fact that it was to go to a funeral, it was one great ride.  We went 400 miles yesterday, and except for getting caught in some heavy rain for about 10 miles, it was great.  Ran 65-70 all the way, and coming home last night, the temp dropped a little, and the last 80 miles she purred like a sewing machine at around 70.  She was a little tired when I put her to bed in the garage, but so was I. ;D ;D
