Title: chirp noise when shifting
Post by wolfen on 09/24/07 at 16:35:34

I have noticed while riding behind my wife on her Savage a sound that actually sounds like she is hitting her horn. A quick little chirp. I took it for a ride today and noticed it when upshifting to 3rd and 4th gears. When I would let the clutch out, it would "chirp". If I hit the throttle while letting the clutch out, no chirp. Is this normal for this bike? I can actually hear it over my bike when I am behind her. This bike is so small for me, but man, they really do move out!

If the front wheel is coming off the ground, that chirp is the rear tire. If not, most likely the belt,, it's the belt,,  ;)

Justin - Does that mean there's a problem with the belt or is it just normal noise?  Mine does that sometimes and I know for sure the front wheel ain't off the ground!

These things make noise. A proper tension minimizes it. The tool from Suzuki gets it too tight. Check the board, search, belt twist tension set

What kind of dressing? Is it sticky? Does it attract dirt?

think its a silicone , spray can w/ small tube, silkolene lubricants makes it for bikers choice (h.d. dealers carry it)got mine at anacessory store..no color, not dirt, must stick to belt...but not to touch...

I did the chain conversion and no more chirp!   ;D

Chirping is annoying, but a little chirping will not hurt anything and is not an indicator that anything is wrong.

The only time I can hear it is upshifting. Not real bad, just wanted to know if I needed to adjust anything.

The belt may be a little too tight, but you can't align the pulleys perfectly because the rear is rubber mounted and moves with tension.  Silicon or wax on the sides of the belt can calm the chirp.

You need some belt dressing.
You can go to a Harley dealer and get some there or you can go to a hardware store and get some table saw belt dressing.
The chirping will appear and disappear in relation to belt tension and moisture in the air - but as other have posted - it is not a big deal
