Title: Electrical problem Post by jok on 09/13/07 at 16:16:08 Hello, can anyone help? 1987 Savage 13K miles. Rode the bike last night, this morning wouldn't start, no lights nothing. Roll-started, it ran but bogged down when turn sigals applied. After 15 min ride it wouldn't re-start. Still no lights no nothing. Checked and charged the battery-its great. Found a bad main fuse, replaced it, bike started-loud sound from starter. When I turned it off and tried to restart-no lights no nothing. I guess a ground fault somewhere, checked all connectors today-only thing I found bad was the signal generator. Any thoughts?? |

Title: Re: Electrical problem Post by thumperclone on 09/14/07 at 17:00:33 a battery could have a bad cell and some chargers will tell you the battery is fully charged.... |
Title: Re: Electrical problem Post by jok on 09/15/07 at 13:07:23 Well according to the clymer manual the little box is a signal generator. As for the fuse, I checked it again and both are ok. |

Title: Re: Electrical problem Post by T-Mack1 on 09/15/07 at 17:31:17 Clymer's.........interesting company.. They have to make tiny changes so to prevent the Copyright lawyers. Factory service manual has an "ignitor" module (sometimes known as electronic ign control module, but I do't see any ref's to CDI...hmmmm). Also there is a "Regulator / Rectifier" module. So, which would the signal gen be?? I'm betting on the ignitor...... |
Title: Re: Electrical problem Post by jok on 09/15/07 at 17:40:10 Well would a bad cell in a battery give you good power once and then suddenly nothing...I mean, lights aren't dim etc just totally dead. I would normally look toward a bad alternator on my truck. But the continuity check on the stator is ok. |
Title: Re: Electrical problem Post by jok on 09/15/07 at 17:40:45 OK "factory service manual" where can I get one of those???? |
Title: Re: Electrical problem Post by jok on 09/15/07 at 17:43:01 Signal generator It's the square, light weight black box on the left side right behind the savage-stickered cover. The manual tells you to check the red and green wires for resistance of 200-240 ohms. Mine is non-continuous. Figure if it is some sort of electronic thing i could have blown it roll starting |
Title: Re: Electrical problem Post by verslagen1 on 09/15/07 at 17:44:24 factory service manual aka Suzuki Shop Manual. Good source is ebay, can be had for $30 |
Title: Re: Electrical problem Post by T-Mack1 on 09/15/07 at 18:41:17 Got my FSM on EBay. It's for 86 thru 99, I have a '01 and so far it covers everything. Also, that's where's it says the ignitor is. |
Title: Re: Electrical problem Post by jok on 09/15/07 at 19:13:31 Haven't been on ebay since my account got hacked, but it sounds like the only source for a manual. So any ideas on the problem? |
Title: Re: Electrical problem Post by verslagen1 on 09/15/07 at 19:28:14 what year do you have? If you want I'll pick one up for you. |
