Title: Savage Monkey Butt
Post by jkhulon73 on 09/10/07 at 16:37:30

Holy cow, my a$$ is sore...

I thought you guys were exaggerating a bit. But after a hundred miles? I REALLY need to put more cushioning in that custom seat...

...or stop losing weight.

I'd take a picture of my bruised bottom, but I'm afraid PETA or Greenpeace might come looking for me and try to roll me back in the water...

But you know what I did after that hundred miles?

I went out and rode about 40 more  ;D

Man, I love this bike  8)

I find that after a hundred or so miles:
1. I need to take a leak
2. I need gas
3. I need something to drink
4. I need to ride more ( after attending to all the above)

You think Savage monkey butt is bad!...
....o.k.,... never mind, I'm drawing a blank here...

Vulcan...no..
Blast?...yuk!...
Ruckus?..
Intruder?...double-triple  yuk!...
Royal?...

I got a Royal monkey butt...

Hmmm, I can't figure this out.
As I have said many times before, the stock seat feels like an easy chair to me.
I did 225 miles yesterday, and my butt was so comfortable I hated to get off the seat. :-/

A couple of weeks ago I rode the Hotter'N' Hell bicycle ride in Wichita Falls, Tx.  for a 100 mile ride.  Now after a 100 miles on a bicycle seat the Savage seat feels like lounge  chair!!  I guess I have  calluses on my butt from bicycle riding, I don't complain about my Savage seat anymore.     Ken in Fort Worth, Tx.

As has been noted in past posts, you have a minority a$$. You should be in our record books as one of the few, the proud, the buttless. Be glad.  ;D

Hmmm, dosen't it stand to reason that the fatter and bigger the a@@.

The more padding so to speak, the more fatty gel shall we say.

The more comfortable one woild be on the seat?  ???

Title: Re: Savage Monkey Butt
Post by serowbot on 09/13/07 at 10:22:44

On my old dual-purpose bike, the seat was so narrow and hard that I would cross my left leg over the seat and sit on that on longer rides.  Not very safe, but...
I also wore padded bicycle shorts...

I think once you do the seat lift, this bike ain't too bad.  Either that, or my a$$ is so callused from the dp bike I can't tell anymore...

That's what I was thinking. That you must have more padding than the other guys :-)

They make padded bicycle shorts?  Hmmm....that's an idea.

But I think the seat problem is that the seat isnt wide enough...and I'm not a wide person but the wider seats seem more comfortable, more like sitting in a(horse) saddle. It fits your butt better!

Title: Re: Savage Monkey Butt
Post by serowbot on 09/14/07 at 23:52:44

Alright,....alright,...
I've been jokin' around here a bit, but I'm pretty experienced when it comes to monkey butt.
I come from the world of dirt bikes (old ones with very little suspension, and bicycles).
Yes,...bike shorts have padding,...the kind with a padded chamois crotch are the best.
 Now,...as far as seats go...
A seat needs to be wide enough to support outside your butt bones.  Feel down there, and you have one on each side.  Woman's are wider, it don't mean you're fat, it just means you're a woman, not a man...  If the seat doesn't support some meat outside of that, those bones are going to carry your weight.  That's gonna' hurt.
I have ridden bikes with seats that feel like you're sitting on a telephone pole.  Bad...bad ...bad...!  Rounded from the center, doesn't work.  It must bowl in the center and rise to the edges.
So, check your butt bones, and if they don't fit the seat with enough left on each side to allow a bit of meat to support the weight, you need to widen the seat.
If you're o.k. there, you want the seat shape to cup you to the center,... that's flat, or higher on the sides than the center.  Many people think if the center hurts, you need to pad it more, that's wrong.  You need to pad out the sides to take the weight off the center pressure point.
Next is where the seat lift comes in.  You don't want to be feeling like you're sliding forward, or backward.  You want to be cupped in the middle.  When you start getting tired, or feeling a pressure, you can then schooch forward or back from there to relieve pressure, but you to know when you're doing it.
Sitting in the same spot for a long time will make you're butt ache eventually, no matter how comfy the seat, so you need to be able to move a bit.  But there should be a pocket in the middle that let's you know when you're in the center.
From there,.. although it's not very fashionable, a fabric seat covering is much better than pleather.  I have a very dark (off-black fake sheepskin) cover on my seat, that is barely noticeable as non-stock,... that is a great help in comfort.  It keeps the seat cool in summer and warm in winter, and provides a little bit of extra cushion, while allowing a small amount of air circulation that stops you from sticking in one position.
Here's a pic of my bike with the sheepskin seatcover on,... hardly noticeable, but very comfortable.  You can buy fake sheepskin at fabric stores for $5 or $6 bucks a yard and make your own.  1 yard is plenty, my best buddies wife sews an elastic round the bottom for me...  I suck at sewing.

http://w2.bikepics.com/pics/2007%5C04%5C03%5Cbikepics-852135-full.jpg

So,... as you can tell by now,... I have a pretty tender tush,...  well,...not so much pretty... as tender, but that's what I've learned from my years in the seat.
Maybe something in here will be of help to all the suffering bums out there.

Post by FreeSpirit on 09/15/07 at 02:01:24

Serowbot....well you explained that pretty good :-)

So can you widen the stock seat?

(I've read about so many things done here that I'm convinced someone can figure a way to do that :-)

But that's what I want is a wider seat. Which replacement seats so far ,are wider?Any of them?

Title: Re: Savage Monkey Butt
Post by islandwahine on 09/15/07 at 02:25:14

I pretty much have my butt up against the pillion, at the widest part. That way my legs aren't scrunched up too much.
I think it's wide enough that way, and pretty comfy too.

Quote FreeSpirit
"Serowbot....well you explained that pretty good :-)

Making the seat wider, is the hardest thing to do.  Just adding a layer of foam can fatten it, but without widening the seat pan, the foam won't support any weight.  Waste of time.
The seat lift mod will scoot your bum back to wider part of the seat, and that is worth trying.  I also recommend a fake sheepskin cover, it will do much more than you might think.  Try them first.  For a smallish seat, the Savage seat ain't bad,... and is worth trying a little fine tuning to get right.

Now, if those mods aren't going to help you, you want a wider seat.
Widening the stocker can be done,... in the sense that anything can be done with enough time and money, but it really isn't worth it.  So, you either want to have a custom seat made (very costly), or find a seat from another bike that you can make fit.
Most Sportster seats are narrower and less comfortable than the stock Savage.  Yamaha v-star seats are very wide and comfortable, but they might look too big on the narrow Savage frame.  You can get anything to fit, if you are determined enough.  I would go to a dealer and sit on a bunch of seats to see which one suits me, and then study how they mount to see how hard it will be to adapt it.
Sorry I'm not of more help, but I don't know of any specific seats that adapt easily.
Maybe someone else here has some ideas?

Actually someone, wish I could remember who, said they re-did their seat and it was more like a saddle.

I'll have to find that post!! Wasn't too long ago.

But the way they described the seat it sounded perfect.

(I'm also trying to imagine if you could clamp something on to the sides of the Savage seat frame :-)

I think the best seat,I've sat on,was a older(few years)  Kawasaki seat, but dont know if you could get one to fit on the Savage....or design one more  like theirs.

But yes,the ideal seat would fit like a saddle!!

Jim,
I went back and read your lycett post,... very nice!
That might be just what Freespirit is looking for.

Title: Re: Savage Monkey Butt
Post by FreeSpirit on 09/15/07 at 17:37:21

That looks interesting(the lycett seat)......but I may just have to go to some of you guys homes, sit on your bikes and figure out which seat I like best :-) Just kidding!

I'm not quite convinced on any certain one yet.....I think it depends on each person's individual liking of what feels better.

The lycett sounds good, but hmmm.... I'm not that mechanically inclined....dont know if I could do something like that or not :-)

Of course if it felt good though,my determination would help with being able to do it :-)

The best seat I've ridden was a Corbin on a Kawasaki. It was (is) like a Western horse saddle; wide, supportive and comfortable for miles on end. (pun intended)

Problem is, it is very expensive, and does not fit the Savage. So I'm still goofing around with different gel pads and soon a sheepskin pad.

Title: Re: Savage Monkey Butt
Post by FreeSpirit on 09/15/07 at 21:53:26

Ok,lets all email the Corbin people(continuously) and request a seat for the Savage!!

Where do ya'll get the sheepskin covers? At a good price?

I'd make one but dont have a sewing machine anymore :(

Title: Re: Savage Monkey Butt
Post by FreeSpirit on 09/15/07 at 22:00:53

Why is the Corbin seat so comfortable? The make of it....what's it made out of or is it the shape of it?

I will try some searches later on it,but right now I've just spent 3 hours!! searching on this site for seat ideas, the pro's and con's.And I'm totally worn out, can't hardly see good from reading so much :-)

Post by FreeSpirit on 09/16/07 at 04:05:28

There is a place on Corbin website to email or send online a request for a product!
I sent one in for a seat for the Savage :-)

It said something like they wanted to know what the public wanted and they would try to attend to it,so who knows.

Maybe if everyone sent one in ,it would help :-)

Easiest way to add a wider seat is a sprung conversion like Dr Jim did.

I have all the parts at home for the small sprung solo. The front pivot comes with a u-bolt, but the mount itself will bolt right onto the stock Savage rear tank mount. I think they cost around $14 (mine was a gift). The under the seat front pivot bar is available chromed or paintable, from $14. The seat itself? You can find the small, leather solo from Canyon Run, Fog Hollow or such for $25-75. BUT, the bolt spacing is 6", the Savage needs 7".  And they are JUNK! Buy a good one, NOT a cheapie chi-com knock-off!

Start checking HD parts sources. The J&P Cycles vintage catalog, V-Twin Manufacturing, Jireh, etc all carry small, medium and large, American made, heavy duty leather or vinyl covered solo seats.

Modern made seat springs (the cheap chromed crap), have almost NO give. Buy a set that lets you sit at a comfortable height and make sure your shocks are set at a comfortable level of resistance/give. Or, hard mount the rear of the seat. Either way looks/works fine.

Adding a lifted solo seat is going to expose your wiring harness. Tape wrap the whole thing, put it in some of that plastic wiring conduit, or cover that section of the frame with a block off plate (plastic or metal, your choice). The harness is rather delicate, the factory splices are not very weather proof.

I'm planning to try an old FarmAll Cub tractor seat on mine.

So what size is this(lycett) seat? Length and width.

It's comfortable?

Old Joke :

Tractor for Sale:
Has no seat and no steering.

Perfect for the person who has lost their a##
and dosent know which way to turn :-)

Had to throw that in ;)

17" wide at the rear??? Wow....I think the Savage seat is only 12".

I just got through putting it back on my bike or I would have had it right here to measure, but I think it was 12".

Well,I got tired of thinking about it for awhile and ordered a sheepskin cover for now.

I may put bubble wrap under the sheepskin :-)

But my main complaint now is....when I did the front lift,it put me further back on the seat, which should have been a good thing, except now I see the padding in the back of the seat is almost gone!

But I'll think more later/soon what to do for that.I dont know what but definitely something!

I emailed Mustang seats and they sent me a email directing me to a website that makes seats for sportbikes.....the idiot. And I havent heard back from Corbin.....may never! Guess we'll have to figure out a better seat than theirs and be richer than them  ;)

You'll have to post a picture, can't figure out what a barca lounger looks like....but I've been up over 24 hrs,so I cant picture much of anything right now....only going to sleep :-)

But....is it comfortable? Did it go on good?

I'm determined to run across something like that.. One that I just happen to see and know it will work :-)

I removed the seat cover and shaved some of the foam off. It seemed like the riding possition was a little better but i shaved off a little too much foam. So I got a sportster seat instead.

ALfromN.H.,

Is that a one piece with pillion.( I havent seen the sportster seat up close so wasnt sure)

Is it comfortable?

What year Harley did it come off of or for ? To fit the Savage.

The "Butt Buffer" seat pad sounds similiar to the Corbin seat ,to me...except for it just being a pad.....but is lots less expensive and so far Corbin dosent make a Savage seat.

But I'm going to try out the sheepskin cover at least until I find something better.A better (whole) seat.

Then I'm going to try to find out how to stay warmer for winter rides....heated vest? heated socks? do they make heated gloves? :-)

Freespirit,

there have been threads in the past about winter gear. It's probably a good time to start one this year. In the mean time, check out gerbing products for heated gear.

Title: Re: Savage Monkey Butt
Post by FreeSpirit on 09/18/07 at 20:37:43

I'm sure I will be getting Winter catalogs soon....but it would be nice to hear reviews on things.

What actually works well and what dosent :-)

Thanks....I'll check out the Gerbing products.

It's already getting cool here in the evening and at night!!!
Seems like it went from 90's to 70's in the daytime, overnight.....that's scary, unless its just a temporary cool spell.

But if someone dosent start a post on this soon,I will.I know there will be days even in the fall that I'll want to ride!and some in the winter also.
