I am working over an old savage and moved the turn signals to back by the license plate and then replaced them with smaller, sleeker, better looking lights. However, the signals won't blink now because the original bulbs are 25 watts and the new ones are a lot smaller and don't draw enough current to cause the blinker to work. This came as a bit of a surprise since on all the cars I've had the turn signals operate faster with one bulb out altogether and still worked if a replaced one light with a lower wattage bulb.

Anyway, has anyone else run into this and do you have a solution other than fitting a different set of lights that take the higher wattage bulbs?

There are a couple easy fixes:
(1)go to your local auto parts store get an electronic flasher.
(2)go to your local bike shop get 2 load equalizers(they are a resistor to draw more power to make lights blink)

I thought of wiring in a resistor in parallel with each rear blinker, but didn't know if there was a better way than that.

Sounds like the electronic flashers don't require as much current as the stock savage flasher. I suppose they have come down in price since I went looking for one that went out on my 1974 Opel. That thing was $75 back in 1976.

What could possibly be better than fashioning the answer yourself? I was gonna suggest the parallel current path/resistor, but you already know it.
