Title: Minor maint'nance = major hassle
Post by jkhulon73 on 09/07/07 at 09:05:13

Went to three bike shops this morning- all three would have had to order fork seals and brake pads. One place said 5 business days, the other two said two to three weeks.

You'd think living in a major metropolitan area, these parts would be more easily accessable.

Anyway, I came home and ordered the parts online.

They'll be here Monday.

PITA. At least the rear brakes only show about 5% wear and I can always add more fluid to the forks in the meantime...

ATF is good for the skin  ;)

You use ATF for the forks?  I am just asking because I never heard of this.  Is it Mercon 4, 5, ??

I live in a town of under 50k population. There's an idot Suzuki dealer here in town that I won't get into. There's also a little shop that sells sport bikes, rally gear and such. They've always got my oil filter in stock and always get anything else I order within a couple days. I just got new brake pads and shoes from there so guess what I'm doing today. A lot of our maintenance replacement parts are quasi-generic it seems. Make sure you look into those kinds of places.

Jack

I think one guy (the shop with the three week wait) just didn't want to be bothered. Said they didn't keep "jap crap" in stock...

Which was funny, since half the bikes out in the showroom were either Honda or Kawasaki and one of the signs out front said 'Suzuki". (I guess the big "HD" tattooed on his forearms should have been a hint for me to go somewhere else)

I didn't see a Harley in the parking lot when I left that joint. Maybe he was just upset they wouldn't hire him down at the HD dealership...

I'll stop at Wally-world on the way home and pick up some ATF- should hold me over until Monday. Don't have a lot of time to ride the next few days anyway...

The on-line shop emailed me this morning and said the parts won't ship until next Monday.

Yippie.  ::)

I did change the oil today.

I think I mentioned it before, the PO had the bike sitting in his basement for nearly ten years and did little or no maintenance. I've been running it kind hard, breaking up and buring off all the crud that's built up in the engine...

The filter on the left is after two hundred miles...

:o

...now I need to adjust the valves again.
