Title: WTF my azz end almost fell off
Post by Thumpin on 09/04/07 at 13:58:28

I was warming up the oil for a change of fluids and decided to take the bike out and really wind it out.  I do not normally ride this way just because it makes thing wear out faster.  The next day I am washing it and felt the rear end (back seat back fender and all attached things) shift over about 2 inches.  I took a look and 2 of the 3 bolts that hold these parts to the frame had vibrated loose.  Maybe I should not push the thumper quite so hard!!!  That could have been a very bad day if the last bolt had come loose while I was going flat out down the road.  Anybody else have this happen?  If so any repeates or was this a one time fluke?  I am now a little worried about all of the other fastners on the bike.

There should be 4 bolts holding rear fender on.use loctite on them when reinstalling.Normally bolts like that just don't come loose. While you are doing that it would be a good time to check strut bolts.

Yeah, i found some weird ones in checking too.

Saw one of the header bolts waggling almost out one morning before work, and found almost all the bolts under the back frame loose on another check.

Just a reminder to CHECK them ALL once in awhile.  ;)

a good time to do it is when the oil is draining at change time

Maybe we should use "Threadlock" blue or something on these critical bolts?

I followed the Suzuki a few times & noticed the rear fender vibrates left to right noticeably at certain RPM's. May not be just mine that does that. The license plate would swing approximately an inch one way, then back, with real gusto, several times before the RPM range changed enough to stop it. Looked to be worse in the lower mid range, mostly with heavy throttle, like 2nd gear.

I guess there's something good to say about the rust over here, free automatic locktite!

As the back wheel must be removed to fix the problem I took it too the stealership.  Surprise!!! they only charged me for 20 min of labor (28.00) to reassemble the rear end of my bike.  They are now tread locked.  We will see if they back out again.  I am going to spend some time tis weekend doing a general tighten-up on all the fastners I can get to.  This was a little scary as I would have had major damage if the last bolt had come loose.  Them thumpers boy do they shake.

I've had the screws holding the foot pegs come loose twice and the shifter rod come loose once. Just make it a rainy day thing to check the bolts.

Oh yeah, rust is definately automatic loctite, problem is when you WANT to loosen those particular bolts. Just had a heck of a time removing my engine mount bolts because of the auto-loctite.

No not all the time. When I got my suzui my husband and I were working on the cam chain and we had a hard time getting the bolt that holds the belt in place off and it would not come off. locked in place tighter than a drum. worked for hours and finally had to cut the bolt off. it was rusted in real good.

I'm sure they would, but probably  not in my lifetime ;)

I know!
I was looking at the screws in the clamps that hold the carb on, utterly rusted! That ought to be fun when I started taking the carb apart!!
