I just recieved my new iridium plug in the mail today and put it in my bike over my lunch break.

I just went back out and started it to see what kind of improvement there would be.

The bike cranked like normal, but just as it caught, there was a loud backfire, then it ran as it had before.

My question is, is the iridium plug firing too early and causing the backfire on an otherwise lean start? If so, how can I eliminate it (other than put the stock plug back in)?

Changing plug wouldn't change firing timing, only change to either a hotter or cooler spark.........which could affect how it runs.

Do you know how the plug is rated? ???

It is an NGK DPR8EIX-9. The plug I just took out was an NGK DPR8EA.

According to the manufacturer, they should be the same plug, same heat range. The difference being that the iridium plug should require less voltage to create its spark.

Is it possible that it is creating a much hotter spark than the stock plug, and thus causing pre-ignition (of sorts?)

In a word, NO. ionization voltage and the coil determine the spark voltage. Spark plug just provides a durable place for the voltage to accumulate and then jump to the other contact, hopefulyy igniting the A/F mixture as it does so.

theoretical question?...If you aren't getting any misses, and therefore each chamber of gas is igniting, do you gain anything from a bigger spark from the sparkplug? I mean the size of the spark isn't moving the piston, it's the huge explosion of compressed gasoline that follows the tiny spark.
Kinda' like a bigger flint in your lighter ain't gonna' make the flame burn brighter.
Am I wrong?

WELL.........some say a bigger spark will give more complete combustion. Could be true, but not sure. Bigger spark does help a engine that has seen better days (smoker).

Would it cause the Bang? ? ? Depends on a bunch of things. Can you get it to do it again??
