Title: Blowing fuses, bike won't run, please help!
Post by toddlamp8 on 08/28/07 at 12:19:23

So I went to go take my Savage out for a ride and I notice that nothing happened when I tried to crank it.  Tried a few easy things and then moved onto the fuses.  Sure enough the top fuse was blown.  I replaced the fuse turned the key to on and about 3 seconds late the fuse melted.  I started troubleshooting and each time I did something I insert a new fuse.  Well, 7 20A fuses later, and i'm stumped.  What is the top fuse on a 1986 Savage used for?  How can I track this down?  I didn't change anything since the last time I rode it, so I don't even know where to start!

Didn't we just go thru blowing fuses.? ? ?

Someone had a short at where the wires go into the headlight bucket.

there's a wiring diagram in the Tech section, look in the index posting.

The headlight was the next place to look.

The circuits are a bit innertwined, but likely are going to need to chase them, however when I had one doing that - twas the turn single flasher with a dead short - your turn signal on?

I can't turn anything on because as soon as I turn the key to ON the fuse blows.

just curious if the turn signal switch was already on before you turn the key

Not sure.  I have tried that.  I ran out of fuses  ::)

Ballast Lamp --

Replace the fuse with a small 12v lamp.  It will light.  When you clear the short the light will go out.

That's an interesting idea.  The fact that that circuit is receiving more than 20amps won't be a problem?

No, the lamp acts as a current limiter -- no different than hooking it directly across a battery with a 6000 amp capability.

That was me!!!!
Actually the short was were the headlight wires got pinched between the frame and swivel part of the forks

That's a neat trick, wished I had known about that one!

But since the light would be running in series with the short that is pulling more than 20amps wouldn't that cause 20amps to run through the tiny filament of the bulb and effectively destroy it?

No because the highest resistance limits the current flow. Max

Max is right....the short is just like a wire to ground.

The circuit equivalent would be just like putting the light across the battery.

Oh yea.....thanks Paladin!!!

Thank the 'Phone company.   I've lit up enought ballast lamps in my carreer.

And I just kept the garage dark and looked for the spark when I turned the key to find my last short!  Went through a few fuses for that one, but it did lead me to where the insulation was chafed on a wire.

Been having the same problem. Last night watched the harness from the right bar switch arc out against the gas tank. I'm deleting that mess this weekend. Also looks like the harness is pinched over the carb. I might just rewire the whole mess while I am at it, with fullsized wiring. The factory harness is rather fragile.

My bike has room on the frame to move the starter button and delete the bar switch...

Thanks for the great tip (using a light).  Sure enough, when I unplugged the right hand control unit, the light went out and the no more blown fuses.  I guess I have to get a replacement now, anyone have one for sale?
