Title: Will start but will die after 2 minutes
Post by fayddy on 08/21/07 at 15:39:19

My savage 2001 will start but will die after 2 minutes unless I switch the pitc0ck to pri. Any suggestion?

I cleaned the carb but still the same.

Sounds like you have isolated it to a fuel delivery issue. Since it runs on Prime but not on reserve or run, is there vacuum to the petcork? If there is vacuum at the petcork( hereafter: Gas Valve) & no gas passing thru, then the Gas Valve is busted.

Agree with Justin_o_guy2.  Check for loose or cracked vacuum hose that goes to the back of the petc0ck.

Don't mean to interrupt the post , but....Where is the petcock?

Can't find it in the owners manual.

Is it under the seat?

Maybe petc0ck is not what I'm thinking of....

Is there somewhere mechanics cut the gas off when they are working on a Motorcycle.

If so,what is it called and where is it?

Thanks!

There is no shutoff, as such. The pethingy is on the bottom of the tank--left side. If you're gonna remove it from the tank, you need to drain the tank 1st. From what I've learned, you have a diaphram leak in the pethingy. Pri lets gas flow to the carb all the time. Go to "search" at the top of this page and type in "pethingy". Or petc0ck. There is a fix for your problem, if you read a few posts on the subject.

I will change the hose tomorrow to be sure. Thanks to all !! ;D

FYI: Don't type the exact word change the O with number zero, other wise the server will change it automatically to  "petthingy"

I like petcork!  Do you think we can petistion to get thingy changed to cork?   ;D

And don't forget to clamp those lines.  I think most of us (myself at head of line) just push them on.  They still can leak if not clamped.   ;D

This is pretty amazing that this topic started yesterday!
The reason why being is that I ran into a similar problem while riding last night. The bike ran great on the way to town, but on the way back it was "sputtering" and in the middle of a curve my engine died! I just gripped the clutch and while coasting tried the starter and it started right back up. It did this 3 times in a row, till I got to a place where I could pull over. It was 11 at night, pitch dark and didn't know what to do. I ended up turning the petcork (cool) to PRI and drove a little while like that. I was afraid to flood the engine though and put it to RES seeing as the ON was giving me more trouble. I actually made it home. I can say for sure that the petcork is clean, seeing as I just recently removed the darn thing while fixing the speedo.
I wonder if my vacuum hose has a crack in it. I do remember that all the hoses I took off had clamps on it, except for one! I guess me pulling it off might have made it bigger so it's not as snug before. Are all of the fuel hoses supposed to have clamps on them?
Also it made my engine knock pretty loud when trying to speed up.

Islandwahine,
Are you saying it ran ok on "RES" and "PRI" but not when set to  "ON"? ? ?

That would be Normal for getting low on Fuel........how many miles since last fill-up?

I just got tired of typing Around PetC0ck & decided to call it petcork, cuz it corks the tank & sounds a lot like petcocK

Tank was 3/4 filled.
I had only ridden about 20 or so miles since I had put the tank back on. It did stutter as well in RES but not as much!

Of course I missed this quote. I'd better go buy a clamp for that little hose. Maybe better yet, I think I'll go buy a new hose!
