Title: circlip
Post by rigidchop on 08/19/07 at 19:04:01

so i got the cam chain in and timed(i hope!) but when i took the circlip off of the adjuster, i bent it pretty badly, anyone use any thing other than stock that i might find locally and not have to drive 40 miles to the stealership?

Well,
The engine I got in pieces didn't have one.  So,  went down to the hardware store and found a SAE (non-metric) one that fit.  It's not a perfect fit but it's pretty darn good.  Could have been just a hair bigger.

The shaft screws in.  unscrew it and take it along.

The manual states that you are supposed to use a new clip every time.  Yeah, right...

Anyway, I reused mine and for added security I decided to try this.  I cleaned it good and smeared red RTV on the groove and the clip.  I figure that a small piece of rubber can't hurt anything if it comes off and worst case it'll just get caught in the pump screen or filter anyway.  What the heck, you use the same stuff on the headcover.

My concern would be that it is a fairly hard piece (although small) that would not go through the main drive and clutch gear nicely. Or worse yet somehow lodge in the one way clutch for the starter gear, what a mess that would be a WFO. Max
