Title: Question on chain conversion??
Post by grandpa on 08/19/07 at 11:44:28

I am planning on doing the chain conversion in the near future. In the tech thread, Hutch cut a 13 tooth sprocket down for a spacer for the nut. Do you cut a sprocket so you can have the splines available or can a high grade steel washer be used with the appropriate inner hole and outer diameter?? Doing it right for safety is paramount but my frugalness has to ask the question!! Thanks for any thoughts!!

You'll get varying opinions, but I used 2 regular hardware store washers that I opened up for a snug fit on the shaft.

They were 15/16" I think.

Also, using a trick that I read on the F650GS web site, I coated the master link to prevent it's becoming absent.  They recommend clear RTV, but mine was red.  So, I used gasket maker instead.

Now, I can watch the chain go round & round as I ride :P

Thanks Greg!! That's what I was thinking but I'm still a newbie on bike wrenching!! As far as the color of RTV, in my case it won't matter. I can't bend over far enough to see it!!

I did use 6 or7 extra splined washers, the same as you use to lock the nut with.
That was easier then to make a spacer and didnt cost mutch.
