Title: Black smoke from exhaust (not carb?)
Post by djpennin on 08/10/07 at 12:40:43

it's been a while, but i was having issues with black smoke, and the bike dying out.  i have the sportster exhaust on the bike.  I havent riden the bike in a few weeks.  the last thing i did was swap carbs with my other 2001 savage that was running fine.  my carb works fine on the other bike, the other carb does not work fine with mine.  i have determined it's NOT the carb.

I have noticed oil seapage from the middle of the engine on the back side.  I dont know if it's coming from the back, but that's where i noticed it.

The bike has 17,000 miles.  What is the posibility that i need a valve adjustment? or need to take apart the engine and redo the seals?

Any other possible thoughts on why i'm getting black smoke and my bike dies after i go 5 miles and it warms up?

thanks

Have you looked at the cam chain?

but if it runs ok for 5 mins then up and dies...

you'll have to restate all the symptoms.  new thread and all.

it seemed to be running ok when i had the old exhaust on it.

but i did do a head plug seal replacement.

maybe it is the torque settings on the head bolts, and finally after xxx miles the bolts that i only hand tightened came lose, and now there is oil in the chamber, and as i ride it more, everything expands from the heat making more oil in there making the bike run crappier and crappier.

hmm...

i think i'll take the top of the motor off, and torque with bolts with my wrench and then reseal and see how that goes.   if not, it'll be going into the shop so i can waste some money :( :-[

The FireLizard was doing that as well just before the camchain tensioner decided to part ways with its pieces.

I ended up going down to a 40 pilot and it works great!

i must have a super restrictive sporty exhaust.

Check your petc*ck's vacuum line for gas.  The smaller pilot jet may be compensating for a fuel leak there.
