Title: Nuts and Bolts
Post by Natanelli on 08/09/07 at 09:02:25

With the help of everyone on this forum the bike I picked up is starting to come together..... at least as far as making it safe to ride goes (will work on cosmetics next year). The only potential roadblock I'm running into now is with Nuts and Bolts. It seems I have a few missing. Off the top of my head I know the bolts for the tank, seat, and battery box are missing. I would LOVE to go to the local Home Depot and pick up some screws but I have no idea of figuring out what to get. I know I can go the Bike Bandit route and buy OEM stuff but it will definately take longer, probably cost more, and might not even be of the best quality. Is there a tool for figuring this stuff out? Anybody have any experience with this issue?

If you look online you can buy metric fasterners by the assortment that work out to be a pretty good deal. I think my last box of 6,8 10, 12 mm in assorted length ran $50.00 or so and will save lots of trips to the store mid project. I think I got them from Rocky Mt ATV/Cycle but am not 100% on that.  Otherwise I think the parts page you access on Bike Bandit and others will give you the fasterners size after the part number. If not most of the fasterns you are looking at will be 6 mm x 1mm pitch. 10, 20, 25, 30, 35 etc mm long. Most ACE hardware stores also have good selections. Most frame to accessory fasterners will be 8.8 strength (that will be marked on the bolt head usually). Some critical engine parts will be 10.9 strength. Max

Hi Natanelli,

I took off the mating bolt, and went to ace.  They have a nice selection even stainless!  I also (With the nuts) remembered the head size and found the size of bolt that way.  I checked it with a socket at the store.  I am changing all of the screws and bolts with stainless!

Yeah, ACE even carries chrome in many stores but it's a lot more expensive.  I went with stainless myself.

The seat bolts are M6x 1mm pitch about 3/4" long. If you are going to get new gas tank bolts it is a good time to raise the front of the seat. The size and pitch are the same as the seat bolts, I'm using gas tank bolts about 65 mm long with spacers to raise the front seat mount.

For the best prices & selection, check yellow pages under Nuts & Bolts. The places that sell nothing but nuts & bolts are the places I go & I get low prices. The only drawback is not being able to go thru bins & look for a certain size that I will recognize, but can't explain. Then, Ace hardware would look like a great deal. I will be using them in the future, too, since the nut & bolt place isnt open on weekends. But, if I was gonna place an order of any size, I would go with the specialty shop.
