Title: Petcock stuck
Post by pollpegj on 08/06/07 at 09:18:21

I just bought my first savage. A 1995 with 2000 miles.
It runs great, but the pet thingy is stuck open so the owner before me put an inline fuel valve on it after the petcock. It works great just turn it on when you want to ride. But I would like to fix the petcock. I tried turning it but it wont move.  If anybody has any ideas or help let me know.

$56.32 plus shipping.

Ron Ayers Link (http://www.ronayers.com/browseparts.cfm?searchstring=44300-24B00)

Does the bike still have the vacuum line on it, from the tank to the right side of the carb?  If not then my guess is that someone took the automatic shutoff diaphragm out of the pet-thingy and then they had to have a shutoff valve to turn off the gas from flowing when the engine is off so they installed the inline valve.

The pet-thing on these savages are notoriously short lived, my bike shut off this very morning while I was on the highway because of it, I had to turn it to PRE to get the gas flowing again.  Maybe you should keep the inline fuel valve  ;)

EDIT: link didn't work becuase the auto correct in the forum changed the name from petc0ck to petthingy (lol  :P ) so I linked it differently to fix it.

Here's a link to our petc0ck mod.
Maybe it will give you some insight to the problem.
I'd take it apart to find out why it was stuck.
There's supposed to be a gas proof grease you can use to lubricate it.

Would like more info on the gas proof grease.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Found some:

Krytox (http://www.loctite.tv/template/ying/pdf/docs/KRYORL-EN.PDF)

This stuff is impervious to hydrocarbon solvents (e.g. gasoline) and will not harm rubber.

It is quite spendy.  You see it on eBay every now and again.

Wow old post...

Be care if you use Krytox.  We used it at work and you should wear gloves.
