Title: Cruiser or Standard
Post by BigWes on 08/04/07 at 16:22:47

When my buddies and i go out my 95 red savage gets all of the looks and questions. This kinda makes my buddies upset because they all have brand new R1's and R6's. I think Its Halarious. Its just because she is so shiny i guess.
But i do get asked if its a cruiser or a standard alot and i reluctantly say cruiser because......heck i dont know why but thats just what I say. So does anyone else here know what the Savage is clasified as? How can i tell? Whats the difference?

Standards look more like street bikes without as much plastic.  Cruisers look like motorcycles should look like.

A cruiser typically has pegs set forward so that your feet lead. Also a more laid-back seating position. The Savage is a cruiser, in my book.

Cruisers have that sunk in seat style, while standards have a flatter shape seat.  This means that on a cruiser, you sit straight up a tilted a bit back, while on a standard you sit straight up or tilted a bit forward.
There is probaly a percentge of bling also in the mix. :D

Cruisers leave you sitting mostly upright with your lower leg pointing almost straight down.   Comfort, not air resistance is the mantra for a cruiser.  Ours is a cruiser that can move its skinny little ass.

Sports bikes make you lean forward a good bit and the pegs are high and moved back so you can corner more before dragging anything.   Wind resistance minimization and maximized lean angles are the mantra for a sports bike.

Touring bikes are cruisers taken to a more ultimate degree -- 12 hours in the saddle without discomfort is their ultimate goal.  Weight doesn't matter.   Size doesn't matter.

These are the classes that sell.

My local shop has a good example of what happens when you try to buck the classifications.  They have a '05 Rune that has been marked down like 6 times, it looks neat but who wants it?  It can't DO any of the classifications very well at all.  Or, more to the point there are lots of bikes that cost a lot less that can do the job a lot better.

My first street bike (see pic) was a standard. Sat more upright. It handled more nimble than the cruiser, because of the rake of the front end. But it was not as comfortable for longer rides.

Notice the peg location near the center of the bike. Made you sit up straighter, maybe slightly forward.
