Title: Need help installing TKAt Fork Brace
Post by Thumpin on 08/03/07 at 13:31:29

I have it now but am not sure if he shipped it in a different configuration in order to save space (as it is shipped it doesn't look like it could be put on at all).  Also do I need to loosen up any other parts on the bike first.  And lastly how do I tell which side goes up.  HELP!!!!

Yes, I know what you're saying.

Take it all apart, it's all turned around for shipping.

Install it smooth side up, unless you need to collect water.   ;D

Assemble it loosely leaving the end caps off.  Place it on the forks, no need to loosen anything.  There are lips on the parts that ride on the forks, so push it down until they're on the forks.  put the end caps on, but don't tighten it up yet.  Align all the parts more or less straight and even.  Screws are equally spaced on both sides and front to back.  Then tighten everything down.

capishe ?

Yeah, I said the same thing when I opened that package. Lay it all out and take a look at the photos posted on the tkat fork brace thread.

I found that it fits so tightly around the fork that I needed a rubber mallet to gently tap the pieces together and I tightened the screws alternately.

Once I was sure everything was in place, I went back and did the final tightening.

Hey, when I first put mine on it seemed real snug, like maybe the wrong size, ya know?...turned out to be the real thick coat of `clear' was in my way. I neatly removed it with a flat file, suppose you could tape it off at the area below the brace if you`re prone to slipping. Metal on metal is better than a potential loosening up.

I picked up about 6-7 thou this way, and it fit purrrr- fecto.

ps, love the handling now!

My question is:  How are you S40 owners going about getting the fork guards off?
Thanks!

Use a razor blade, an exacto knife, or a box cutter.
Cut at an angle and be careful so you don't scratch the paint or the metal underneath.

It is very easy, so go slow. Start by lightly scoring the fork guard, then make the deeper cut in the same place to get it off.

Toss fork guards over shoulder. Install fork brace. DONE!

I am repeating what someone else said on this forum regarding taking off the fork guards on an S-40.  Take a narrow piece of wood and cut the end off square.  Put the square edge against the lower lip of the guard and "tunk" it smartly with a rubber mallet.  Move around to the back and repeat.  Go back and forth, front to back. and the guard will slip up onto the narrow section of the fork.  You will now have plenty of room to use a pair of dikes to cut the guard.  Works like a champ - I did mine earlier this week.  Also you eliminate the chance of scratching anything.

Good luck!

Whoops!  Looks like I got caught by the "correctness police!"  Substitute "diagonal currwes" for d**es and you will be all set.

sorry missed that opportunity.
I was so excited, I think I had it installed before the paper floated to the floor.   ;D

I grabbed a narrow wood chisel & lightly started driving it into the plastic. It parted nicely & not a scratch on the forks. Took more time to walk to the tool box to get the chisel than knocking the guards off.

Pictures can be found @ www.tkat.com.  Follow the links to the F/B section.  These are for the XS1100 Yamis but the family resemblence is there.

Riding Rules:

"Try to stay on the solid part of the pavement.  Do not go near the edges of it. The edges of the tarmac can be recognized by the appearance of gravel and loose pavement, fences, chuck holes, posts, buildings, ditches, &c.  It is much more difficult to ride fast there.
