Had a friend look over the bike the other day.
he showed how the fuel flows through the fuel filter and onto the
float bowl area. Everything looks correct.
Battery was not so charged, so we jumped it.
Started right up. Got my charger, charged battery 100%.
Now I go to start and .... nothing. You her the engine turning over, but never quite catches a start.

any suggestions fellas?

oh it is a 96 savage, with 2900 mikes on it.

If the battery is run down or old the voltage can drop suffieciently to crank but not start. With the starter going the voltage drops enough not to give adequate spark.

Try a push start. My technique is to get some speed going, pull in the clutch, put it in 1st, start cranking the engine using the starter, then let out the clutch. Letting out the clutch will stop the starter (on a stock bike) so you don't have to worry about a coordinated clutch out starter off action. What this does is get the engine going so that when you let out the clutch it won't lurch to a stop. And I put it in 1st cause when you let out the clutch you can leave it out. Mostly when you do this the engine will cough and sputter a bit then catch then you pull in the clutch and rev it a bit or just plain go. Others have different opinions and techniques, but this works for me.

Battery was purchased new . november 2006.

haven't tried jump starting again, but will try.

also may try popping clutch after work today.

Several things here-

Battery not taking charge: get it tested.

CDI ignition requires high enough voltage to work, or it will not spark. No need to check ignition or charging systems until you know your battery is good.

I no longer recommend to people push or pull starting their motorcycles. Especially medium to large bikes, and least of all a single cylinder bike. Sending a new rider out to bump-start their Savage is an invitation to disaster.

Even an old coot like me who has bump started many a dirt bike, and even old Nortons and SR500s finds the Savage to be very, very bump-start unfriendly. An inexperienced person doing it alone might be prone to drop their bike or hurt themselves. I highly not recommend it, especially to first-timers with no experienced geezer present to tutor and/or help them.

Fix the bike, forget the bump starting.
