Title: She's nekkid - now what?
Post by skatnbnc on 07/29/07 at 17:24:20

Today I finished removing the stupid Boulevard badges off the gas tank, and the S40 stickers have been off for weeks.

THANKS big time to BornOnFire for the photo detailed instructions on how to do that (it's in the Tech section).

So now I have a naked bike; perfectly logo free. And well....it looks a little empty!

I'd like to look at some Savage stickers, but where can we get those? And is it difficult to adhere them over the exisiting clearcoat?

Tell me no sanding is involved... :P
After all the waxing and rubbing this weekend, I'd hate to mess up that smooth shiny surface!

I could cut a sheet of white waterslide decal paper and print this:

on my 4"x6" photo printer.  You'd have to do the clearcoating before soaking in water and sliding onto the tank.

OMgosh! That sticker really IS me! LOL!  ;D
I will check out the link too.

BTW - my bike colour is the 'silver' blue. So that pink HelloKitty might be just the thing!  ;)

Depending on how you feel about aftermarket decals, a my friend has the tribal butterflies tank design from Lethal Threat that looks pretty nice.

or there's a bunch available from Purple Harley (there's that name again)

Whatever you do, be sure to post pics and let us know how it turns out!

I decided to hold off for at least a week or two and see if I grow accustomed to it. If not, thanks to the forum, I have lots of options for decor!  :)

Debadged mine, too.  Love it!  Such clean lines.  And do people stop and gawk.  They can't figure out what it is.   ;D

Well I spent waaaay too much time online last night looking at K-Kittys. Very interesting.

End result - not sure if I want to add one permanently. So what do you guys think about a magnet K-Kitty pic?

I was thnking about trying it that way for awhile to see about where I want it positioned, and possibly even put it on the little triangle where the S40 stickerbadge used to be.

Part of the fun of owning a bike is deciding how to "make it your own" (can't remember whose ad that was?) Anyway, I say if you like it, try it. There will always be someone who loves it or hates it, lucky for them they have 3 other directions to look! ;D The only caveat I'd offer is make sure ANYthing you put on stays clean enough on the mating surface not to sctatch or fade the finish underneath so your temporary design doesn't leave permanent reminders if you change your mind. Some magnets do terrible things to clearcoat.
Have fun with it, and let us know how it turns out.

it will never stick right as there are no flat surfaces.
Double stick tape might be a better choice for temp.
Easy to part off with nylon line and a little wd40.

Yeah, I thought about the curved surface; the tank in particular.  So trying any ideas on the little side panel was my idea for seing how "I" like it.

Will see about the magnet scratching problem. Right now I have a tiny tiny City of New Bern bear* on the side of my battery box. It is made from very soft vinyl and a really wuss thin magnet. It barely stays in place, but I like him, so he stays.

I also knew you guys would have ideas for decor that I would not even know about, and that has turned out to be true, and great fun exploring.

Frankly I don't give a rats arse what anyone else thinks about it - as Southpaw said, they don't have to look!

*New Bern is named after Bern Switzerland. Bern is the Swiss word for BEAR, so that is the town logo.

I like decals! This one came from Advanced Auto Parts ,It is under several coats of tinted clear.

No you can't feel or see the edges of the decal..

I'm going with sticker idea for now because it can be easily removed.

However, I had a guy today who said he paints bikes with those fancy designs that HD around here sport, and he said he would be happy to paint the crazy Hello Kitty onto mine if I wanted.

It's kinda like a tattoo though...a little too permanent for just now.  ;)

Yep. The paint tattoo is rather permanent....well, Unless ya sand it off, but stickers can look tacky, imho...

In between maintenance today I stuck the kitty on.  I think it's too small, but the bigger one would not stay on because of the curvature.

Don't forget, this is all an experiment so input is welcome.
Any brillant thoughts?

Size looks about right to me.

Hey! Understated is underrated (I think that's the phrase). It catches the eye without taking over. I like it.  How do you feel about it?
I get razzed from a couple of Harley riders about putting an eagle and flag flame on my "jap bike" but they don't get it's not about the bike, it's the rider - hence the "you got three other directions to look' mentality. Start small and see what you like! IMHO, you're going about this the right way and have fun with it. Fair warning, it's been my experience that, like tattoos, once you get started  you're rarely satisfied with what you started with!  ;D

Enjoy

Dan

yes, bigger, maybe a bit more aggressive.

Maybe in a pose like rambo, bfg at the hip, blasting away.  legs spread in a lunge or running.  That would be more you since I know you can handle a piece.

or in revolutionary garb and musket.  Now that's you!   ;D

An update on this today!
I stopped for lunch and was sitting inside within sight of my bike (its 122° F which is too dog gone HOT to eat outside like I usually do).

The parking lot was busy, and soon a truck pulled in next to my bike. Out come two men who beeline for my Suzi, and spend several long minutes going around and around and then around AGAIN.  Head scratching was seen, as was wrinkled brows.

I literally started laughing out loud right there at the lunchtable by myself - they were clearly trying to figure out WHAT kind of bike that was but I have it insignia free!  ;D

They finally toddled in, and scoped the restaurant, eventually seeing me next to the window with my helmet on the table.

One came over, and promptly asked if that was my bike, and what kind is it, and he is looking for one for his daughter, and it looks just the right size for her and he can NOT believe it is a single cylinder 650!!! <:^o

He actually wrote down the info I gave him on where to go see new ones, and the web address for here too.

Yahooo! The badgeless wonder strikes and gets a new convert!  :D

Just my .02... Doesn't Staples or Office Max have magnetic sheets that you can run through a color printer And put it on. Just to see how it looks. I wasn't suggesting riding that way. I agree "It's like a tatoo... not ready to commit until it's "just right"
For what it's worth, I bought a new Nissan Frontier and told them "I don't do free advertising. I expect to see their sticker gone when I pick it up" Well you know what happened and so I took a heat gun to it but didn't use much patience, end result --- debadged the back of the truck, completely. I'm Okay with it.

I had the same exact thing done with my car the day I picked it up = I insisted they remove their logos off my vehicle, or pay me $500 a year to drive around advertising for them. Needless to say, they hustled out and the dealership badge was promptly removed.

Yes, I am using a stick-on from a laser/ink jet sticker packet to see about how I like the Kitty on my bike. So far I think I might go larger with that, and leave everything else off.

I was particularly pleased and laughing when I saw the man bending down to double-take the Kalashnikitty when he was looking for ID on my bike yesterday. Well worth it!  :D
