Title: thoughts on a gas gauge or odometer
Post by met347 on 07/19/07 at 18:21:05

I just got my new S40 and love everything about it, except not having an odometer and gas gauge.  Any suggestions to fix the problem??

I've asked the gas gauge question myself a couple of times, I hope you get better answers.

There is a bunch of info in the tech section.

There is an odometer, there is no trip meter.  All you need to do is remember the start mileage and subtract from current.  If you have trouble remembering, a small lock with three number wheels will record the last three digits.

The fuel gauge runs into the problem of too small of a market to pay for the engineering -- so you have to engineer your own.    The market is small because there are relatively few Savages, and most of us do not see a need for a fuel gauge. We have reserve -- which is good for upto 40 miles.  You switch to reserve and you look for a gas station.  Unless you're in the middle of the Mojave in which case you should have planned ahead.

You'll not get a better answer until someone, such as either of you two, figures out a better answer.  You can start by looking as fuel gauges for motorboats.  A gauge would look nice on the left side of the tank to compliment the gas cap.

low tech and cheap.... got the idea here somewhere..small (luggage size)3 digit combo lock to the cables..i get about 100 miles b4 reserve, reset at every fill up

I did the same, got a 3 digit luggage lock from 99 cent store. Hooked it to the tie wraps on the bars just below the front brake reservoir. I listen for that stutter (or a slow down at idle) at about 115-120 miles. Fill er up and reset the lock. First lock lasted almost a year, then broke, so I bought another one. It's cost me 2 bucks so far.

;D Yeah, I carry around one of those 3 digit luggage locks too ... in a fanny pack strapped to my sissy bar. Works great!

When I first got my Savage I used a grease pencil to write the last 3 digits of the odometer on the speedo glass at every fillup. Eventually I got a computer made for dirt bikes and used that. It gives me a speedo and tripmeter up high on the handlebars where I can see it without dipping my head.

I vaguely remember seeing a gas gauge... basically it was a piece of clear fuel line that ran down the side of the tank... was that on savage bobber dave's bike? or was that in THE HORSE, Backstreet choppers?

I went the expensive route.

Veypor VR1: tach, speedo, fuel gage, gear indicator.

You could put a tap on the bottom of the tank and one on the top.  And run a clear line between.  Could be any where you want.   ;D

How is the Veypor?  Is it difficult to install?  How accurate is it?  I think I am going to go the route but I would like some feedback first from current owners.

How acurate? don't know, haven't been thru a speed trap lately.

Not real easy.  Guess I could an install thread.

There's a whole lot of settings and unless you read it real close it can confuse you.  My first mistake was reading the manual all the way thru.  It's a mistake for me to do that because once I've read something, I can't stand to read it again.  Done that too many times.

Still haven't figured out all the features.

To me, the cost made me quince.  But I couldn't see the speedo below my chin and being a newby I needed a tach.  So getting those 2 things where I could see them justified the cost.  Later on I added the billet cover.  Gives me alittle comfort leaving it on the bike as with the universal mount it's a quick disconnect and it's gone.   ;D

May I ask where you got it and how much you paid?  I am looking around and they seem to be about $300.  I like the idea of the tach, trip, and fuel gauge all being in one unit and higher up.  Looks like a quality piece too.

Ebay, wouldn't do it again.  didn't save enough for what I got.

pm Lancer.

Veypor is in canada, so while support is in english, anything you get from them has to go thru customs and canada post... good luck, took me a month and a half to get a replacement cable that didn't work on my old win98.

The company is based in Canada but does have an outlet in the US.  I am an authorized dealer for them and am listed on their website.  When ordering from them the parts may come from the US office or from Canada ... just depends on parts availablility at the time.

If anyone wants a Veypor ( $279.99 )I will offer a 10% discount for the members of this website.  The markup on these is not much, basically the 10% is pretty much half of the profit margin.  Shipping is not crazy since the stuff is light weight.  The company does not offer quantity discounts so we cannot work it that way.
Installation is very easy.  Learning to use all of the features takes a bit longer since there are so many of them, but this is a really cool computer device.    I have used it for 2 hears now and find it to work extremely well.   Their website has a lot of info and explains more of the detail very well.     www.veypor.com

I think kenGlong had the best idea for you. I had no idea that they made aftermarket fule gauges for dirtbikes, so it would be a cool idea and would set your bike apart.

I remember that too -- it was on my first bike, a two-stroke Suzuki 250 from about 1964!  Remember the X-6 -- tubular frame, oil injection and a six-speed tranny?  This was it's predecessor -- dump the oil in the gas tank and pray you don't foul another spark plug.  Four speed transmission and a white pressed steel frame.  It bore a striking resemblance to a refrigerator, but it was two wheels and a motor, so I was one happy camper!  And them were the days you could go hill-climbing and cow-trailing just about anywhere, which I did.  Just had to be careful with the low pipes.

Ah, memories!

As for the plastic tube "gas gauge" -- I suspect it doesn't pass today's safety standards, probably because it isn't very safe.  If the tube slips, cracks or leaks you're dumping out gas right above the motor!
