Title: Checking Service Records of a Used Bike
Post by polloloco83 on 07/19/07 at 07:16:59

I just purchased a 96 Savage with just a little under 5000 miles.  This is my first bike, and it's got a bit more power than those 250cc bikes at the MSF class :).

My qeustion is: is there a way to see what service has done by dealerships?  If I give a dealership the VIN will they be able to give me a history?

I don't know of a way to check the service records at a dealership, but Carfax will be happy to sell you a license to look up registration, inspection, and accident history on any vehicle with a VIN.

Last year when I bought my bike, carfax didn't work for motorcycles.

You could as the PO where the service was done.  Sometimes their records are more accessable.

I got it used from a dealership, I don't know the previous owner.  The salesman said he was also military, it had a Missouri plate.  I can tell it was also someone's first bike, it has some evidence of having been dropped before.

Let's just say that the 600 mile service wasn't done, would it still be running after 5000 miles?

I used CarFax to check out a couple of motorcycles this year.

The real important thing with the 600 mile is too change the oil as a lot of parts are grinding together for the first time and getting shaped together.

The second is to readjust the valves.

And last is to check the torque of many screws and bolts so something don't fall off.   ;D
