Title: keep blowin fuses
Post by jamesb on 07/09/07 at 18:27:21

Salutations,
Before I get started on my problem, I'd just want to say that this forum and everyone who contributes to it is awesome. I'm new to motorcycles this year and I sleep a lot sounder knowing there are people around the world willing to lend a hand to a rookie. Cheers to that.
So I recently rode my 2000 savage to another city (250 miles) and got stuck in a rain/hail storm. Everything went relatively well considering. I rode the bike back home in dry weather and had no problems. When I got home I parked the bike for about a week. When I went to start it yesterday I had no power whatsoever. No lights, no engine, nothing. I charged the battery overnight and I'm certain that it is full. Then I checked fuses. Since I'm a rookie I randomly started looking at wires underneath the seat. I randomly found that the "Relay 20A" fuse (under the right side of the seat) was blown. I bought some replacements and changed the fuse. The bikr started the first time and I rode it to the gas station to fill up. When I tried to start it again at the gas station it went dead. I checked the fuse and sure enough it was blown. I replaced it again but it blew before I tried starting the engine.  So I'm assuming that there is short somewhere but I don't know where to start looking. Should I take off the gas tank and look under there? The wires under the seat look like they are in pretty good shape. Any suggestions? Thanks ahead of time. Cheers

If you do not have a service manual yet, use the search feature in the tech section for a typical wiring diagram. Then look at any of the wires that leave that 20 amp fuse and see if you can find one that has a bare wire that is touching the frame, a ground wire, or another circuit.  I'd start with the kickstand as that is one you would have put down at the gas station to refuel and would have been down when youre replaced the blown fuse the 2nd time.  You can make a reseting breaker with a 20 amp circuit breaker some wire, etes and spade terminals like the fuse has. wire it up and insulate the terminals well with electrical tape or brush on insulation. Insert it in the glass/plastic fuses place, it will open and close and give you chance to find the short to ground or another cicruit/load. Max
