All of the talk about the cam chain tensioner of late got me interested in browsing the Factory Service Manual for my Savage (see signature).

I could find no reference in regards to there being a service limit on the extension of the cam chain tensioner.

Am I missing it, or is there really no such reference in the Factory Service Manual?

Tribal knowledge.

18mm from housing to shoulder of plunger.

That's as far out as it can go with it wobbling about and damaging the housing. They don't want you to know that so they can sell you replacements. ;D

So far as I can find the only refference in the suzuki service manual is for chain wear limit

May be , because this will be an incorrect way to check for a wear. The cam adjuster extension will only tell You that there is a problem, but it will not tell You is the wear in the slider or in the chain.
What we are talking here is an easy way to determine is there a problem and cheap way to patch it. We are not making it new, but we are squeezing another 10-12 K miles without major troubles.
