Title: Gas cap gasket - any ideas
Post by Thumpin on 06/22/07 at 07:08:20

I need to replace the gasket under my gas cap.  The obviusly custom job the the PO put on here is #1 worn out and #2 sucked to begin with.  I thought I would see if I could get the actual gasket from the stealership.  His response was that I would have to buy a entire gas cap cause they can't get just the gasket.   What about the keying was my 2nd thought after making it through my 1st thought of how f-ing stupid is this.  This has to be a common part to replace.  Ideas out there?????

I took an old bike tube and cut to a circle the same size as the gas cap.  Cut a hole in the center just smaller than the inside of the cap and pulled it over the inside of the gas cap.  I seals perfectly and I no longer leak gas down the tank no matter how full the tank is.

Sounds like a plan.  I will try your "field expedient method".

That's exactly how I made a gasket for my fuel cap.
