Title: new owner w/questions
Post by smitty79 on 06/21/07 at 18:39:17

Hi all, great site.  i just bought a 2000 Savage and have two issues/questions.  1. I'm wondering what can be done to the seat.  I'd like something wider and possibly further back.  2. when I downshift and the rpm's get low, the bike is backfiring..any ideas???  Thanks for the help in advance, I know new guys can be annoying.

First, annoying isnt reserved for new guys.

The seat can be swapped for a Sportster seat & there are others.

The backfire is common. Swap exhausts, several options, some cheap, others, not so cheap.
Rejet, open up the airflow at the intake & Voila, new bike.

What Justin said about the seat.

I was able to adjust my Savage for no backfire with the idle mix. (No cost except time). Got 50+ mpg in all kinds of riding.

A backfiring LS650?  Never heard of that before.

Backfire problem..........tossed out the white spacer and replaced it with a 3/32 washer, unpluged pilot and turned out 2 full turns and adjusted idle screw.  There are some fine 'gearheads' on this site and they have been a great help to me.

RIDE SAFE!!

while your waiting for a new seat you can quickly and cheaply make your current seat a little more comfortable by raising the front of the seat.  There is a thread around here under the name of "seat lift" that has instructions and pics.

I never even bothered getting a new seat after a 1" lift.
