Title: idle in a cool morning
Post by Special_K on 06/15/07 at 09:19:40

Hi all, I have some difficulty getting my 2005 S40 to idle properly in a cool morning, like 45 degrees. I can not start it at all without pulling out the choke. When the choke is pulled out, it will start but idles very slowly and the engine might stop at any second. Sometimes the engine shuts off with the choke pulled out when I stop at the first stop sign in my neighborhood. When it's warmed up everything is fine.

What adjustments shall I make to get it idle properly at start up? I have my bike as my first bike for a month now and I'm pretty new to all these adjustments.

Thank you for your help!

You are starting it correctly, and the bike is doing what it should.
If it is idling slowly, like yours, ease the choke back in a little.  The rpm's should pickup.
You may feel a "click" when the choke is about half way in.  Let it idle there for a minute (to get the oil moving), then ride away.
After the engine warms up, reach down and push the choke the rest of the way in.

When I had the stock carb installed, I used to start her up with the choke pulled out halfway, then push it in after a few minutes of running.

check your idle speed after warm up 1000 > 1200 rpm
choke will slow rpms  as stated above there is a 1/2 way indent also...

First or second stop?  Here in LaLaLand, where 50 degrees is "cold" and 40 degrees is "bitterly cold" I never use full choke -- there is a detent at what feels like 1/3 to 1/2 choke.

Thank you all for your response. Pulling choke half way out works great for me!
