Title: Will discolored muffler be a problem?
Post by Special_K on 06/12/07 at 07:49:27

Hi All, I'm a new guy. I just picked up my 2005 S40 a month ago as my first bike and have been very happy riding it. It has about six inches of its muffler turned blue. I don't mind the look, but, will the blue part rust? My garage has a higher than normal humidity level. How can I prevent rusting from happening?

Thanks a lot!

You talkin muffler or header pipe where it comes out the engine?
The thing is jetted lean. You can learn how to get better power & get rid of the lean condition right here. Ditching that stock muffler will soon be something you will understand the need for. It's easy & can be done for little money. Very little.

I think it's the header pipe I'm talking about. I have this bike for only a month and have not gone through the manuals yet. :-[.

I'm really looking forward to learn more about modifications I can make to my baby bike. :P

I had mine ceramic coated in satin black and I love it.  See previous topic Ceramic Coated Header (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=RubberSideDown;action=display;num=1178810607).

I bought a rough looking header pipe from Bikemom with intent of just painting it BBQ black, but now that I went back and looked at the pictures of your ceramic coated one, I need to find a place around here to get it done reasonable. There is a blued Dyna muffler on my chopper that I like the sound of that I may have done too. Then finally everyone will be able to see my fancy flamed chrome muffler clamp cover against the contrasting black! ;-)

Original poster: More often than not, bluing just happens to pipes. Sometimes with careful jetting it can be avoided for a long time; but eventually under some atmospheric condition it will get your pipes anyways. Just my experience, so I don't worry about it too much.

I kinda like it blue, looks like it's been doing some work.
It's 11 years old, 17K miles, no rust.
