Title: Honked off
Post by PhotoProf on 06/08/07 at 17:07:17

So... this is probably not a hot mod topic but I was wondering if anyone has upgraded their OEM issue horn... it seems like most bikes sound like an insect with a nasal condition. I would like to add something that lets cagers know I'm there if needs be.

$$$$ the limit..$13 low tone cager style snail shell  black plastic housing from auto zone..use my 3" slash cut hard crome more than that horn....(then theres the golfballs woven into the handelbar cables as reserve)

Yup, the low tone car horn from Auto Zone works great, put one on my ride last week. Just unplug the stock unit, unscrew the mounting bracket from the frame and change out the horn on the bracket. Then mount the bracket and horn back on the bike. I angled the horn down a little bit so it won't fill with water or you can just drill a small hole in it as a drain.  Real easy and sounds like something BIG ;D.

There is no requirement (that I can find) in the California Vehicle Code for side reflectors.  So I pulled them and mounted *TWO* "Highway Blaster" electric horns, Hi/Lo tones, one each on each side.  Have a horn relay so as to not burn out the horn button and to ensure full voltage to the horns.  I seldom use my horns, but when I do I sound like a Cadillac bearing down on them.

If replacing the stock horn with just one horn like the AutoZone type mentioned Above would a horn relay be a good idea or not necessary?.

Definately a horn relay is in order when upgrading to a 'cager' style....they suck ALOT of juice, and you can fry more than just a couple of wires or a switch without using a relay. The reason I know ???

My buddy had a Honda Shadow 1100, and tried the horn upgrade, when mentioned the need for a relay, he sluffed it of, sayin "a horn is a frikken horn, dont need no stinkin relay". He was so proud of the new horn, he used it quite alot, until some wires got a little too hot in the circuit and decided to melt through and weld themselves to some more wiring...shorted out EVERYTHING, even the fuse box melted.

He sold the bike for parts, nobody was willing to rewire it, and the whole wiring harness and electrical stuff from  Honda was over 2000 BUCKS to replace.

Horn relay's are pretty cheap insurance.

K1200LTryder- I'm glad I ask. Thanks for the heads up. I will definitely use a relay when I upgrade my horn.
