Title: Valve loosening Up Post by Scottwerty on 06/07/07 at 16:56:38 Well I adjusted the valves some 800 miles ago and today I'm getting some valve noise. So back into the belly of the beast I must go ( sigh ) Quick question how tight are those nuts suppose to be? I thought that I had tightened them up pretty good the first time. |

Title: Re: Valve loosening Up Post by serowbot on 06/07/07 at 22:36:54 Not just snug, but tight, but don't strip'em. Then check after you tighten 'cause they will have changed. And don't confuse your .mm's with your inches, I did that once! Also, very hot days will naturally increase valve noise. If you can't hear valves on an air cooled thumper, they're too tight. |
Title: Re: Valve loosening Up Post by Kropatchek on 06/08/07 at 01:08:06 Use a .005" feeler for in- and exhaust valves, you can't go wrong then! Torque spec is in the SSM or Clymer, but I'm still figuring out how to get my torquewrench onto the nuts! Anyway: use a box-wrench for the nuts. |
Title: Re: Valve loosening Up Post by Scottwerty on 06/19/07 at 16:44:14 Sorry for the late reply on this subject. Been really busy I started it up yesterday and the valve noise was back to normal so i took it for a spin to the local coffee shop and listened there, normal. then went back home and listened once again, normal sound. I think i need a gremlin bell or something. I appreciate all the input. maybe I'll heed the warning and take a look at the cam chain :-/ -Scott- |

Title: Re: Valve loosening Up Post by firsts40 on 06/19/07 at 18:37:17 :oSerowbot, you just answered a quest I was ready to ask. Here in South Mississippi, I have noticed my valves, or think that is what it is, becoming a little more noisey than they were earlier this year. The temps here have been in the mid 90s almost every day with high humidity. I wasn't aware that the high heat made much difference in valve noise. Now I can rest easier. Don't want to hurt Suzi. :) :) |
Title: Re: Valve loosening Up Post by firsts40 on 06/19/07 at 18:39:03 >:( I also have that dreaded speedo rattle. Plan on fixing that in a month or so when I take vacation. |
Title: Re: Valve loosening Up Post by Scottwerty on 06/20/07 at 09:28:40 Its the little things that will drive ya nuts. Touched my speedo and sure enough it squeaked, saving that one for a later date. It seems everytime I i check the furom i find something else to fix. |
