Title: My New Muffler Mod
Post by russellwhitlock on 06/04/07 at 18:10:24

I was wanting to make my savage a bit noisier, so car drivers would hear me when I'm beside or behind them, as I don't like getting cut off. But in NZ, noisy motorbikes can have trouple getting Warrant Of Fitnesses.
So, I drilled two additional holes in the rear plate of my standard muffler, and welded a nut around each. Now, when it comes to WOF time, I'll just screw a bolt into each nut, and the noise will revert to standard.
Does anybody know whether I need to actually re-jet my carb now, or whether there is enough adjustment on the current jet to accomodate two extra holes?
And if I do need to re-jet it, what size jet should I go for?

I would try going at least a size or 2 larger on the main jet.  You will know it is too large when the engine bogs down at wide open throttle (3rd or 4th gear test is fine) and then go back down to the next smaller size.
On an '80's model Savage the needle has 3 clip positions for tuning midrange.

And then remove the little cap covering the pilot adjusting screw if it has not been done already and adjust for the low range.

You have to test run the bike with each change to find out what it needs.
