Title: PIAA Halogen Headlights
Post by PhotoProf on 06/04/07 at 13:31:26

Has anyone tried the PIAA high intensity halogen lights? Sounds like they should work and anything that increases visibility sounds good to me. From my research, it sounds like there is an "anti-vibration" version of the H4 (I think this is what the Savage/S40 would take) bulb.

I decided to try the PIAA Xtreme White bulb ($56 w/shipping for two bulbs from Direct Tuning). These are not the "anti-vibration" bulbs but I'm not running off-road so decided to go this route. I'll try and post an update when I make the change.

The main reason I'm changing to the PIAA bulb is not to see but to be seen! I figure anything that helps other people see a motorcyclist is a good investment.

Do these bulbs require any changes to the electrical system on the Savage/S40, or are they a simple replacement bulb that will plug in?

From what I can tell, it is a straight plug-in with no modification needed. It is a H4 configuration so I think it is good to go. The main thing is that this is not a "higher" wattage bulb so it shouldn't put any extra load on the electrical system.

That answers my questions PhotoProf.  I will be looking into them.

I hope during the day you are running on high beam as well - that really assists with the visibility issue

I tried a Silvania SilverStar awhile back & it was brighter but the new ones are now blue. I've heard great things about these: http://www.autolamps-online.com/products/H4%20X-treme%20centre.htm in my Google research but they're only available in Europe & the U.K. at this time. I'll be getting them as soon as they hit the shores here though.

Just installed the PIAA bulb today... it definitely looks brighter plus has that interesting "blue" cast to it. Plugged in to the stock socket assembly just fine.

I dont run on High anymore in the daytine. When I see myself in a position where high vis is uppermost on my mind, I flip the Pass switch a few times & run the light high & low to get their attention. When I see someone wanting to left turn across me I flash it a few times & I weave a bit to make myself be something besides a dot.

I agree with you about not running on high all the time. A person might as well take advantage of the Hi/Lo toggle that the S40 incorporates.

I've read this thread two or three times and noone seems to have found an AV bulb, I want one for SR as she doesn't have a balancer shaft.
