We'll need more info,
was the bike sitting for a long time?
do you put it back to run after you start?
does it idle ok? or kind of slow?

only starts on prime might be a petc0ck problem or the vacuum line to it from the carb (the one with a wire wrapped around it).  check for cracked ends.  pull the gas line off the carb and into a container.  does gas flow in the run position if you suck on the wire wrapped line?

My idle drops to about 900 between shifts and I usually have it set for 1200.  So if yours is really low it may quit between shifts.

don't think the previous owner drove much. he told me, at least, he checked everything and everything was fine.
idle speed seems ok but how do i bring it up? the little screw?
stall happens between shifting on higher gears like 3rd and 4th.
ran outta gas the other day and had to fill the tank that day.
it starts just fine on prime.

may be as simple as a vacuum leak (the smaller hose that runs fromt he carb to the petcock).

If it starts on prime, it may be a lean condition. Are you getting much backfiring?

Mine can't find time to die in a downshift. If I do pull the clutch in, I am goosing the engine so the engine rpm & tranny will be synched with the rear wheel. That way I don't skid the rear wheel when I let the clutch out. OR, dropping from 5th to 4th & 4th to 3rd ^ 3rd to second, I can just goose it & step down on the shifter & Voila, Downshift,, easy as pie., 2nd to first takes a real stout GOOSE & very well timed step or it's rough on the tranny.. so I dont.
