Title: Tire Life Expectancy
Post by Thumpin on 06/01/07 at 06:24:10

I have just changed my tires (front was bald back was Square!!).  What shoud I expect to get out of a pair of tires on a properly set up and mantained bike??

it depends on the rider, the bike, and the tire. i just got 16,000 miles out of the dunlop 401s on my HD over two years (80hp daily ride), new 404s go on today. some people may have rode them longer, as there still is tread left, but they're getting pretty slippery for my riding taste. a softer tire will stick better, but usually wont go as many miles.

The IRC tires supplied by Suzuki on new bikes have a short life expectancy. The rear tire on my '02 only lasted 5,000 miles before it was almost worn smooth. From other posts it looks like the front IRC tire is good for around 10,000 miles, the rear IRC tire 6,000-7,000 miles depending on your driving style and road conditions. There are some riders who claim to have gotten a lot better than the milage I've posted on thier IRC tires but most of us agree that the stock tires wear out fast.

yep, depends on the tire.

I'm getting about 8000 miles on my Metzler ME 880 rear for my V*1100, and I don't know, LOTS on my metller rear for the savage.  I've ahd a dunlop 491 elite II on the front of the savage for 4 years now, maybe 16k miles.  tiem for new ones even if there is some tread left.  the dunlop 491s are a hard rubber, and don't grab quite as well as the ME 880s.

metzler front ont he V*, uh, maybe 10, 12k miles? maybe 16k?  it seems to be about 1 front to 2 rears, and I definitely go thru the rears at 8k on the V*.  my savage is so lite there's very little wear despite the constant hard accleration.

Thanks,  You have all given me at least a ball park.  I knew it would be alot shorter than cage tires but I was just trying to get an idea of what to expect in general.

For the Dunlops I have jsut shoed my beast with, it appears that somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 is about what to expect if I play nice and easy w/ the bike.

Stock rear tire is 140/80/15. Hase anyone mounted a 140/90/15 tire like the one on the S50. I eyeballed the space between belt etc, etc and it lookes that there's enough space. This tire being slightly taller will give you about 1 mph more per 1000 rpm so at 4000 rpm you'd be doing 64 instead of 60 mph. :) :)

Vtail,
I don't remember whose bike it was on but I remember that some one said that a 140/90/15 actually syncs the speedo to a more accurate reading. Although for clearance and  bounce you need to go to a taller shock,12.5's I think. Fills out the bike nicely. Al around better ride. When the time comes I will definitely look into this mod.

I have 10,000 miles on 140/90/15's. No suspension mods. I am replacing the Maxxiss with a Dunlop & the Dunlop says 140/90/15, same as the Maxxiss, but the Dunlop looks bigger to me. Someone has a pic of a Dunlop & stock tire, side by side. Big difference in the meat.

Great, I thought that would work. I'll probably also will do the chain conversion at 17/45 and tire change at the same time since stock this machine is geared to way too short.

Some one on this site who was running the 140/90/15 Dunlops stated that they had had to disappear one of their fender bolts to avoid rubbing.

I have Dunlop 491 Elite II's with a 140/90/15 on the back.  When using the Suzuki saddlebag supports, I had to switch to mushroom allen bolts and use the highest preset on the shocks.  If you don't have saddlebag supports, it's probably okay.

Since I went to 12.5" Progressive shocks, it's a moot point.  I have lots of clearance.  To illustrate the difference in clearance between the two sets of shocks, see  the image below.  The top is with stock shocks using the stiffest/highest preset.  The bottom is with 12.5" Progressive shocks using the softest/lowest preset.
