Title: gasoline leak?
Post by Trippah on 05/25/07 at 18:45:23

HI all - been smelling gas as I approach the bike, finally noticed some gas collecting at lower left corner of tank closest to seat.  Took tank off, tightened the petthingy since it the only place I could think would leak.  Maybe knocked it a little loose removing or installing tank?  Its only a 2002, shouldn't have rusted out this quick.  Still a little moisture this morning.., any suggestions (aside fron my wife's suggestion I hold a candle up to it so I could see better. ;D)

What's the difference between "flashlight" and "flash lite" beside the spelling?

;D

Took the tank off once again, stood it on its mounting flange and, would you believe it, there is a seeping leak from underneath the mounting flange.  :o
Hmmm, has anyone tried any of the tank coatings..and if so, how did it go and what brand did you use (What brands are there??)  I'm guessing welding is out of the question, a kaboom issue. Thanks in advance for any help...it is need and much appreciated.

Tanks can be welded. Some folks rinse them thoroughly, some run them full of exhaust gasses. Me? I wouldnt be close enough to know what they did, but you can cll around & see if anyone will do it & whats the cost. That part's free. Mig oughta do fine once the explosive issue is managed. ( I have heard of this stuff being welded, never seen it)

I've stopped low pressure leaks/seepages with JB Weld on tanks and vessels. May be worth a try and a quick fix if it's just a small permeation.

Start calling local real radiator shops, see if any still line fuel tanks. If you find one, they will acid clean and likely boil out the tank. Then spray/bake in a rubberized bladder liner. If you go this route, figure on likely repainting the tank. You may not have to, but better to be ready for it.

You could try a do it yourself kit from Kreem. Some peope like it, I've not had much success with it.

See if a local independent shop has a can of Red Kote around. They will know what you mean. Good stuff, kinda hard to find anymore. Just like anything else that works, the EPA took a dislike to it.

JB Weld? Temporary fix, gas will eventually pop the bond.

POR 15 Makes a Fuel Tank re-line kit for about $60. I used it on my UNIMOG and it works fine.

Thanks for the sugestions..I remember a radiator shop in Worcester that I saw working on a gas tank  (auto) 20 years ago..I'll have to check if they ae still in business.  Thanks WD.   If that's a no go , then I'll look into your por 15 BornOnFire.  I'm not too crazy about used, as my tank was, if I read the sticker corectly, made 11/2001.  Seems like an early failure.

Yes, I have used a tank coating once.  Tedious, messy but once done it worked.

The only issue that I see is that I used it to seal some rust in the tank.  Don't know if that would work here with a break in the steel.  The tank might continue to crack and I don't know if you could trust the sealer.

Do you have a friend with access to a TIG welder?  Myself, if I had the tank and I cleaned it out, then I'd weld it up.  Just have to be smarter than gas vapors is all...

$60.00 for a re-line kit, plus the labor to use it. Wouldn't it be a better buy to get a tank off e-bay for about $40.00 delivered?

Thanks AL, just was searching this based on bduff's comment.  Does anyone know if the later year boulevard tanks 03 and up will fit a 2001?  Or how much "modifying I would have to do. I must admit that as I can't see the leak, I'm a little worried that the tank metal might be fatigued under the tab, rather than rust?
I noticed a new one is$300 + so slightly used is looking better.

Looking at the fiche, do the new '03 and up B-40's have only one mounting bolt compared to the savages two??

Come on.  You think the S40's went to a single bolt tank?

They don't illustrate 2 bolts because then they have to identify both of them.  Takes 1 x 2 bolts.

Look at the fiche for the seat bracket.  Takes 2 bolts.

My S40 has exaklee 2 bolts at the rear of the tank.

If you swapped to a GZ250 tank, you'd gain some extra capacity too...

About reading the fiche..well lets just say Christmas Mornings were Hell..the front wheel goes where??? :D :D
Thanks for the clarification guys..This is where this forum is so helpful, and Barry68v10 brings up a great thought..increased capacity in a GZ250 tank., a paint job to put it all back together.., .It does make sense to..although that will lead to mods in the seat... AH, grasshopper, you have seen the light...
