Title: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by grim on 05/11/07 at 20:32:12 Anyone want to share the brands and retailer of your LOVED windshields? And what heights are they? do they go above your eyes? Thanks guys/gals |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by justin_o_guy on 05/11/07 at 20:44:36 If I was gonna stick one on the Suzuki I would want one that is easy to install & remove. That way, summer could be enjoyed jamming thru the summertime weather& winter I could hide behind a nice windshield. Anyone have one like that ?( I mean, while we are askin) |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by Savage Librarian on 05/11/07 at 20:46:06 I never found one for the savage that thrilled me too much, but that was just me. I had a 15" shield of unknown make that was similar to the OEM one. It worked well to keep the wind off my chest, but it all hit my helmet and tossed my head around. On my other bike I have a Memphis Fats that does a tremendous job. My dad has a Memphis Slims on his. The general rule of thumbs is that the shield should come to roughly the tip of your nose, heightwise. That'll keep the air moving over your head, but still allow good vision. If you're looking thorugh the shield, it's likely to cause issues for you at some point (kind of like looking through your car windshield without windshield wipers in the rain). |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by grim on 05/11/07 at 22:34:03 nice info guys. thanks for doing the experimenting for me. My guess was to buy a shield higher than my head so all the wind goes right over? and I will probably keep it on all year....too lazy |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by verslagen1 on 05/11/07 at 22:52:09 I have a memphis shades demon, 21" from the light cut out to the top. It mounts to the handle bars with 2 rods, easy on/easy off. It's hard to mount on drag bars though. Plenty of room with the harley bars or buckhorns. If you are experiencing head buffeting, either raise or lower the windshield beleave it or not. If you lower it, the buffeting that knocks your head around is now below your chin. The advantage is more air in your helmit, yet it not pounding on your chest. ;D |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by ALfromN.H. on 05/12/07 at 01:21:32 I have a memphis fats 21" on mine and I like it alot for early or late season riding but it comes off and goes back on easily. The top of the windshield is right at eye level since I put the sportster seat on. Before that, I was looking through it but never had a visibility problem except in the fog. It'll be coming off for the summer. I tried the smaller oem style but didn't like the wind effect on my helmet. Just one mans opinion. |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by PerrydaSavage on 05/12/07 at 02:27:36 I have a National Cycle Flyscreen on my Bike ... it's a bitty thing and so doesn't look too big on the front of the Savage! Works pretty good too at keeping a bit of the wind pressure off of my chest and upper arms ... also does a decent job of deflecting incoming rounds (bugs) over my head ... I'm satisfied with it! |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by justin_o_guy on 05/12/07 at 06:50:07 & that "Bitty Thing" costs? Can you tell us in Dollars? Not to the penny, just a "Kinda Sorta" price is fine with me.. Easy installation? I have the S40 with drag bars, not the Savage buckhorns. Grim? what bars have you got? What speed do you run that blocks the wind off your chest & deflects bugs so well? Helmet buffeting an issue? |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by grim on 05/12/07 at 10:18:33 I have the stock bars. Are these the buckhorns? And I don't really care about looks. I just don't want any wind on my chest and helmet. A fats 21 seems right..... |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by georgekathe on 05/12/07 at 13:04:13 grim - the stock bars depends on what year you have - think the early ones were different, then they went to the buckhorns & then changed them again to higher risers & a more drag bar style (?) |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by PerrydaSavage on 05/12/07 at 14:57:42 Justin ... I got the Nat. Cycle Flyscreen on e-abay for around $35USD + $20USD for shipping ... I think they retail for $100+USD? It wasn't difficult to install ... clamps to the upper fork tubes ... so handlebar type shouldn't be an issue. Zero helmet buffeting (I'm only 5'-4 1/2" in height though ...) and I've noticed it thowing bees, wasps, etc. into the slipstream (if approaching at an oblique angle) at speeds over 60 kph ... and helps with the wind pressure at speeds over 80 kph ... I bought it because I wasn't happy with the look of a regular sized shield on the LS ... I returned that and got the Flyscreen ... and it works well enough for me! 8) Paladin also has one on his Savage ... maybe he'll chime in here with his observations? |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by Folsomjack on 05/12/07 at 20:05:24 I have a Windvest with a smoke 16" shield and it comes on and off with a 3/16'" allen in a minute and is adjustable 7" vertical Looks way cool and works great. Not cheap but the best sport-shield I have ever had. |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by Savage = HD eater on 05/12/07 at 23:57:46 Check out this National Cycle page for the Savage. http://shop.nationalcycle.com/perl/cycle/nresults2.html?search_model=su-056 ;D ;D ;D |

I googled windvest & checked out their site. SO simple an approach. That's ellegant. Looks very "easy on, easy off" & attractive. Looks functional. Certainly not cheap at $345.00 or so, depending on model. My wife is taking her MSF in 2 weeks. I can't see her at 60 MPH without a windshield. Have to wait & see how this all pans out. |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by grim on 05/13/07 at 08:46:37 so I just ordered a Memphis Malibu 18''. Seems like 18" will be enough to go over my head. Ordered a Solo Luggage Rack from MotoLeather too. Will be removing the sissy bar and adding a Givi topcase to back with backrest option on the topcase |
Title: wiRe: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by ALfromN.H. on 05/13/07 at 08:58:49 Grim I hope you will post some pics |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by skatnbnc on 05/13/07 at 09:18:24 I was getting too much buffeting without a windscreen on my Honda, so I was glad the Suzi already had one when I bought it. Biggest thing I noticed was the better control at higher speeds, and the bugs bouncing off the screen instead of my face. Since I dont have a lot of upper body strength, the windscreen helped as it deflects the wind off my upper body, allowing me to steer with less effort. And getting smacked by a wasp at 60 mph is more than a little distracting! |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by Mister_Breeze on 05/17/07 at 16:42:30 Bought the OEM for the wife on her '06. Helped out but even at 5' 1", it's still way too low for real protection. She's complaining of the helmet buffing and I'm sure I'll end up with a larger one eventually. I like nose high on my bikes. |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by Starlifter on 05/17/07 at 19:39:11 What are windscreens like in the rain without wipers? |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by verslagen1 on 05/17/07 at 21:38:20 Like an umbrella, drenched without, sort of wet with. use rainex and you don't need them. ;D |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by ALfromN.H. on 05/18/07 at 02:59:14 Someone told me that you should never use Windex on a windshield but haven't heard anything about using rain-x. I've been using rain-x on my car for years. I was told that the best thing to use on a motorcycle windshield is Pledge furniture polish. I've used it and it seems to work pretty good AL |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by Trippah on 05/18/07 at 05:07:05 HI- I have the Enterprise by slipstream(er?). If I sit up, i look over it, slouch a bit and i look through it. I chose it because it also protects my hands..besides cost, which was maybee $135., the other downer is that the clamps for the handlebar have nevr worked all that well for me so the windshield virtes against the brake resevoir. It makes riding down to 35 degrees comfortable. |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by Trippah on 05/18/07 at 05:11:21 and yes, thats should be "vibrates" against the brake resevoir. ;D Its 36 degrees here..aaaarg. |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by RadarORiley on 05/18/07 at 08:46:01 I have a Spitfire by Slipstream & love it. I even like the mounts, I have used them to put keyrings & goodies on by unscrewing the nut, & popping it loose & sliding rings on to it. I have mine adjusted so I can just see over the top in case of rain. I have never used rain x on it but we do use it on our cars.. fasinating to see the rain drops run uphill. |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by Savage_Rob on 05/18/07 at 10:25:07 I don't know about love, but I like mine a lot. It's a National Cycle but I don't remember the model at the moment. It was on the bike when I bought it and I've found it works quite well at keeping me a lot cleaner in various conditions and it helps in reducing fatigue on longer rides. Last weekend I did a couple of hours in some often wooded areas and I caught a lot of kamikaze bugs on my boots, half-chaps, gloves and the upper 1/4 of my helmet. A couple hit my arms but my torso and face were completely spared. The front of the bike and my windshield took some work with Simple Green afterward though. I also have one of the fly screens Perry spoke of and it does a lot more than I expected it to... but I prefer the larger shield if I'm going to ride where I might need the more protection. |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by Glockhead on 05/21/07 at 12:48:07 I love my National Streetshield. I bought it at Skagit Powersports in Burlington, Washington. I'm 6' and it is below my line of vision but deflect the wind just enough for me and it relatively small. |
Title: Re: Anyone LOVE their windshield? Post by sparkett on 05/23/07 at 06:01:14 Love mine ;D in fact I got one form my v-star. they said it wouldnt fit, so i did some modding! sent em a pic and got the reply, "nice bikes" lol! love the lowers ( keeps the bugs from hitting the shins) and keeps the wind off my face and hands well too. the stock "cop" one didnt do it.http://bikepics.com/members/sparkett/ |
