Post by dubbington on 05/07/07 at 09:11:31

First Drive after almost 20 years of sitting....'86 ls650
Cleaned tank, brakes, carb, oil

Runs great just idles rough. Runs better when choke is out.

any ideas?

Havent got a manual yet, how do I increase the idle?

thanks

Did you get it fully warmed up and take a drive?

You cleaned the carb?

If yes and yes, then it sounds like you have an air leak.

Sounds like you need to clean the carb again?

The choke isn't the flapper valve in the top or inlet of the caruretor like you may be used to. Think of it as a small carburetor that is parallel to the main one, that allows some air and extra fuel around the slide to aid in starting and provide a faster cold engine idle speed. If it runs better on, you are very lean and probably have partially plugged pilot or main jets. Could also be the slide is stuck or not working so the only repsonse you get is the poor running due to some extra air with no fuel. In a CV carb the throttle simply requests more RPM and the slide actually opens the air passage and the varius jets/needles control the fuel to with it. Max

Your carb bowl and jets are full of varnish. Gas turns to varnish when it sits unused. Your gas tank could be full of junk too.

I like the "parallel universe" comparison :P

Pretty even consensus....air leak, lean, clogged jets.  All mean that the air to fuel mix is wrong.

So where'd the Dub go?

I cleaned the tank and took the carb off and drained the bowl and checked the floats but that was it.

I didnt take the carb apart cuz the bike only had 112 orig miles.

Ill drive it a lil more and see.

If you're not going to take the carbs apart to clean them, you might want to consider a gas additive such as seafoam that will "melt" the varnish. There are directions on the product for how to mix it with gas. Run a few tanks and see what happens.

Put a half a can of Seafoam in a full tank then run a full tank of pure gasoline then another half can of Seafoam in a full tank. If that fixes it, great. If not, time to remove the carb for complete disassembly and cleaning.
