My sister in law just bought a 2003 Savage and since she is very short would like to have the sissy bar removed. Anyone know how to do this?

You have to remove the side rails holding the turn signals. Their are two set screws holding the backrest in place. IIRC, remove the turn signals, then remove the side rails. bolts for the side rails are under the fender. It will help if you jack up the bike after removing one of the shock bolts from each shock. a pivot adapter for your socet helps as well.

The sissy bar is held by a pair of bolts above the fender, a pair of bolts thru the fender, and a pair of hex-socket bolts bolting upward thru the siderails. You might be able to remove the upper bolt without loosening anything else. If so the other four can be pulled and the sissy bar removed.

The sissybar is what secures the rear of the siderails. Without the sissybar the back nine inches of siderail is unsupported. I find it easiest to mount from the right, barely sliding the left foot across the driver's saddle. Sissybar does not interfer at all.

If you wanted to replace the side rails with S40 ones (no backrest attachment point) I have a pair in a box at home.
