Just wanted to share this little project with you. My wife wanted to take her paper work and lunch to work so I had to make a Bagger out of the S40.

I started off at ebay and $83.00 for Saddleman's bags with Sportster brackets. I took the turn signals off because they were in the way. I bought aluminum tubeing and some angle aluminum to hold the light's. I made some metal bushings to fit inside the tubeing and threaded a couple of holes in them for the mounting screws. I drilled two holes at an angle for mounting bolts and bolted the whole thing onto the license plate bracket after polishing the aluminum.

Next I made bushings for the holes the lights came out of, I drilled and tapped holes in the bottom of the bushings so I could hold them in just like the lights were held before. Next I drilled and threaded the bushings so they could hold the saddle bag brackets. I bought aluminium flat bar which I cut to fit then drilled mounting holes on each end. The flat bar sandwiches the support flap of the saddle bag then wraps under and around to the outside side of the bar. Pop rivets hold the flap in place on the bar.

The wife wanted a windshield so I bought the Memphis Fats 17". The Fats gives her plenty of protection around her hands and with the bags in place it all looks very proportionate.

Very nice job. Doesn't look like any 20 minute piece of work.
No telling the amount O $$$ you could have dropped at the local shop, and, if you went to the one Doc uses, they might fly off at the first railroad crossing! Aww, that was unnecessarily tacky,,
What are the dimensions on the bags? Real leather? Your aluminum flat to pinch the bag flap to the fender brace is sharp & well built, attractive.. I'll bet she is just tikkled,, My wife & daughter will be taking their MSF driving course at the end of next month. Tried this month, but the thing was filled up. go figure,,

The relocation of the turn signals looks similar to the way Paladin's are done since he added the LeatherLyke hard bags.

I don't have the bike here right now so I'll have to give you the measurments later. Those are imatation leather bags but you can't even tell the differance accept in the rain { nothing gets wet}. I think you could wrap the flap around the chrome support then rivet it to the bottom were you can't see it.

Excellent way to mount the bags! The '99 I got recently came with bags mounted in the typical way; with the strap under the rear pillion pad. Unfortunatly, the paint on both sides of the rear fender is rubbed all the way down to the primer by the friction of the bags rubbing. Also, there were NO support brackets to keep the bags positioned, yet somehow they survived with little if any damage. I need to come up with some sort of mounting solution; because the bags will likely end up on one bike or another. It would be nice if I could easily move the one set of bags to either bike easily.

Nice job on the signals too!

I know the synthetic leather that Willie & Max use is pretty stout stuff and requires virtually no maintenance, whereas leather requires regular upkeep.

I found some pic's of his bike. They are very similar! I can't see how he mounted them but I do see what was supposed to be mounted in those two holes above the license plate. The reflector was missing on mine when new and I couldn't think of what those holes were for so I used them to mount the light's. I did want to keep the light's high for safety reason's and that I am glad about.

Hey - T140V - I just love this modification!

Those bags look much larger than the ones that will fit the S40 without TS relocation!

Any way,,,,would you be willing to post the dimensions of those Saddleman's?? I need to carry a 15 X 14.5 laptop back and forth to work and I'm looking for bags that it will fit in, than do the Turn Sig relocation and bag mounting.

This solution is very nice indeed.

Looks really good! Nice job. I just took a Memphis Fats windshield off my S40. It was one of a pair of used 'shields I bought off of Craigslist. I used the brackets from the small Suzuki screen on the bike and drilled the 'shield to match. I ended up taking it off because it seemed like the wind on the highway was shaking me around. It might be just a bit too much windshield for the bike. YMMV, of course.

bike looks great!i'm also trying to find a way to get a good size bags on my bike.also i liked the windshield i just bought one and waiting for it to arrive ;)

also the bags i have on my bike are out of a hunting catalog but ther over the seat i did mount brackets to tie them to it. however they are good size but look alittle out of place. i have a set of bolt on bags but was unable to mount them because of the light. picture are worth a millon bucks 8)
