Title: Wiggly noisy speedo?
Post by skatnbnc on 04/24/07 at 14:29:58

A new noise started today and I was wondering if you all had any thoughts.

I can hear what sounds like a small loose bolt chattering somewhere in the front when I am riding (which is a LOT now that the weather is finally warm).

Nothing obvious upon inspection. So I tried putting my hand on things as I was riding to see what was moving and making noise. The clutch lever was a little off and noisy. I tightened that up during one break, and checked all other front end bolts during the bank run.

When I went to the accountant a few minutes ago, I put my hand over the speedo, and found it moves a little (circularly) and the noise stopped when I pressed on it.

I cannot see anything to tighten on that item, which is stock. Hmmm...any ideas on what to do next?  :-/

this si a pretty classic problem for the saveg.  I do not recall the fix as I don't care about it on my bike.  Try using the search feature...  look in the tech sect... also, removing the tank is fairly easy, and you can get at the reatining bolts there...

search "speedometer rattle"

Yep - some speedo's start to rattle - need to pull the seat and a drained fuel tank to fix it from the underside of the tank

Pull the tank. Oh gawd.  :P

Can't I just ride and ignore this one?  :-/

it's up to you!  it's just a rattle...

pulling the tank is fairly easy...

pull rider seat (2 bolts near back of seat, under it).

two more bolts at front of seat to loosen tank.  remember the order of the parts.

set petc0ck to ON or RES, not PRI.  remove two hoses going to fuel petc0ck from carb

disconnect speedo drive cable.  Do not loose rubber oring.

now it may or may not be tricky.

lift rear of tank a little, pull backwards, and rotate the tank so that the right side of the tank is coming up. keep pulling back.  This part of the procedure is a little different for everyone as the frames vary a bit from bike to bike...

Disconnect electrical connector.

tank is off.

set to petcock to PRI to drain gas.

fix rattle.

reinstall tank & seat.  add gas.  ride.

yes - but it'll likely start to bug you - really draining the tank and removal isn't real bad - and besides you might as well re-jet and sand down the white spacer while your there :)

getting the stock carb out, witht he batt box, and air tube, now that's a pain, IMO!  I did it twice.  Then it was F this, where's my grinder and new pod filter?

Much better.

I don't even bolt my tank on anymore... I can take it off in under a minute.  w/o taking my seat off...

if you're cafefull, you don't need to drain tank.  but wait till it's low at least.  and don't turn it all the way over.

Just have on hand something to plug the fuel line, mine leaks abit even when off.  A big screw driver will do, not a regular one, A BIG ONE. Or a 1/4" shaft or a little bigger.  I use the spark plug wrench lever.   ;D

don't need to pull the carb to jet it or do the white spacer - just pull the tank and seat - me i never pull the tank full - you just take the fuel line off the carb and stick it in a 5gal fuel can go have a beer and the tank is drained.

Ya'll are making this sound doable...but not this weekend.  Maybe in a few more weekends (got out of town business first).

I did find the speedo rattle previous posts (holy cow - I am NOT alone!!) Thanks for the help there.

And I just turned the odom over to 2000 miles today! 8)
(which means i've put 1,825 miles on this baby since Sept 06...and many more to come!)

yeah, I've heard you can just rotate it... after I yanked it the two times... shrug

and beer is how my bike got to look the way it does...

Guess you need to get out more...especially in a small town!  ;)

I don't think it works that way - some dude in a parking lot work on his motorcycle is likely not going to attract a bevy of ladies  :-/  however the inverse is going to work every time unless the guys are brain dead ;)

If the tank isn't empty, no biggeee, just stand it on the end that goes under the seat & lean it in a corner, set it on something that wont slide & wont scratch it. old piece of carpet fits the bill. IF you can get your hands on some of the insulation that comes with a window unit air conditioner, it is about 1/16th thick, 1" wide & has adhesive on one side, black foamy stuff, I cut it to fit under the black plastic that the speedo is housed in. That little bit of soft stuff insulated the speedo from the vibes enough to stop the rattling/buzzing completely. If you have the speedo in your hands & a good blade in an X-Acto, it's a piece O cake. I havent looked at Lowes, but there may be some kind O weatherstrip available that's not so thinck that it would look messy. The stuff I used is not noticeable at all.   Ohh, I tried ignoring the rattle & just riding it,, didnt work long at all..

Are none of you having trouble with that foam insulation or rubber strip deteriorating due to the gasoline?

I have various sorts of that on hand, and all of it is prone to breaking down when exposed to fuel, even the fumes.

I did mine long enough ago I cant remember just when it was, I know it was last summer, cuz we bought the air conditioner. I overfill & create leaks often & have no issue with the foam breaking down. Its soft, like you say, I guess its never gotten straight gas on it & not enough fumes to hurt it.

I put a quick disconnect on my fuel line and it really helps with removing the tank.  It's a little more awkward with the added weight of fuel but now I don't bother to drain it first.

Why would you have to drain it anyway?  I just get a small dribble in a rag when I pull the hose off...with the petc0ck turned to ON, that is...:P

I used to drain it because it was easier to handle empty, then I quit and just took the fuel line apart at the inline filter and let both ends drain into a soup can for a few seconds before removing the tank.  Now I just use the QD.

Some folks have slight variations in the frame that won't allow them to get the tank off. I used to drain & remove the petrooster because I couldnt do it, then someone posted how & I managed by the narrowest margin. I have to slap on the throttle side( rightside) of the rear end of the tank after raising it & dragging it back a bit, to clear the frame & that isnt complete, it has scratched the frame up some, but I can't see it when it's all together, so it's not really scratched,, right? That, & oiling the rubbers under the tank helped, too. Sure hope the oil doesnt adversely affect the rubber cushions

Not sure if my buzz was the same as your noise, but here is how I fixed mine.

A simple and honest answer...and I was just giving you a hard time.

The tank is a pain in the butt when full.  Especially if you need to look at the bottom :P

Use TRV's method or my silicone rubber squirt technique and "fogetaboutit".  Good to go.

It's obnoxious, the dealer is no help, but my fix is going on 5 years now just fine.

Another silly Savage Thumper trait, all 'cuz of a spring mounted speedo.

What are the springs for anyway?  A speedo on the handlbars ain't got no springs.  BZZZZZZ...bzzzzz....

If I had had the shrink tubing  handy & the washers I woulda gone their way. Cutting that insulation down to make it fit was a pain. But, I had the stuff just layin there & it LOOKed like it would do the job, so I gave it a try & am satisfied with the results. But, should it ever fail, I wouldnt go to that effort again. Radio shack & some heat shrink would be in my future.. Silicone stuff is always here.. & thats a good answer to a bothersome little Buzzz. I just used what I had available,

Found this site with some tips and tricks including the noisy speedo fix using rtv.  Just another option I guess, but never tried it myself.
