Title: Electrical accessories & charging system capac Post by Redfire_05GT on 04/16/07 at 13:29:04 How many watts of electrical accessories can be added to an '05 S40 before overloading the charging system? Looking to add: driving lights - 70 watts; Hot grips - 35 watts; heated vest - 35 watt, or jacket liner - 47 watt. |

Title: Re: Electrical accessories & charging system c Post by thumperclone on 04/16/07 at 17:02:53 PIE P= I x E P=power / watts I= current / amps E= electromotive force / volts 14 amphour battery x 12 volts = 168 watts per one hour untill battery is dead when engine not running( not charging) 2 ea. 20 amp fuses(fuses are sized to wire gauge so fuse blows b4 wire burns/fires/smokes) SO ..... 20a x 12 volts =440 watts the difference is a safety factor to allow for inrush current usually 125% of load....my way around these low capacities is replacing lighting loads (bulbs)with leds.. some here have had good results with 2 x 70 watt light bars but me thinks no other extra loads... was a post last year about the alt/rectifer output...some serious capacitors and proper wire sizing/fusing??? |
