Title: Newbie, wondering if I got a good deal ?
Post by murphy77 on 04/14/07 at 18:05:28

Hello all,
I'd like to start out with an introduction. My name is Dennis and I'm 44yrs old, from Nevada. I just happened upon this site yesterday in antisipation of receiving my bike and think it's very cool, hope I can be a contributing member shortly.  :)

I bought a 1996 Savage LS 650 with 5200 miles for $1700 and brought it home today.  ;D  It appears very clean and was well taken care of. Do you all think I got a good deal ? Thanks...murphy77

I bought a '95 last August with 7800 miles for $1200. I got myself an excellant deal and so did you. It's a great little bike for getting all your stupids out of the way. You may also find it the only bike you'll ever need. Congrats!

Welcome aboard - www.kbb.com Kelly Blue Book - lists the average retail at $1905 - so yes, if it's not beat up and runs well,  I think you got a good deal.

Welcome to the site. I think You got a heck of a deal to . I bought my 97 for $350.00 With the motorcyle trailer, But the person who sold it had it sitting out in the weather for 4 years, But ran pretty good once we fixed a couple of things and adjusted the valves.

welcome to site - there is a Iot of good information on here for you to read.

paid $1500 for my '96 with about 9,000 miles on it & as it was very clean think I got a reasonable deal. I really wanted to pay $1400 but buyer would not go for it & it was first time I'd ever seen a Savage for sale in my area & really wanted one so had to bite the bullet. I put a lot into mine - front tire was original & though not 100% worn out time  for replacement. among other things put on ebc pads/shoes & steel brake line & superbrace & improved muffler & K & N slot in (& new bars to suit my riding stance).

only thing I was bummed about having to do was reupholster seat (bad repair job crapped out soon after I bought it) - $60 I'd rather not have had to spend but consider rest of $$ spent worthwhile to get bike up to standard I wanted.

pleased

I just had to go out to the garage to make sure my savage was still there, call me crazy or call me happy  :D

Welcome aboard!  Sounds like a good deal to me too.  There's a wealth of information on the site and a lot of great folks too.  Familiarize yourself with the search facility but remember to set the number of days to something like 800 or 900.  Also, stop by Alice's place (Sluggo's table) sometime.

Welcome to the site.

I got my 1996 for $650.  It sat torn apart for 5+ years in a backyard shed.  I have spend another $350 on missing parts and misc chrome that was too badly rusted to polish.  After tearing it down and cleaning and rebuilding her, she gets 56 MPG with my 270 Lbs self on her.  Now just need to make a few changes for comfort of a big guy and I'll be all set for a while.

Yup, if it runs and looks good, I think that is a fair deal. As long as others are telling what they paid...

The 99 I recently bought cost me $1000. I was a bit concerned that it had 27k Miles on it. But looks and runs great now that I've put a $35 used magneto/ignition pickup in it. However, it did cost me about $150 to rent a U-Haul trailer and drive down to Dallas and haul it back. Plus some misc. small parts, I'm still under $1400 into it, and it has a several hundred $$$ in accessories on it.

I traded a tanning bed plus a few bucks for my '96 with 17,000 miles on it.

Timing tensioner and rear guide shot.

By the time I get it together, I'll have around 400 bucks into it, less my labor.

Cant buy a moped for that money....LOL

Hi Murphy
Sounds like a good deal to me.
I got my '96 for $1800 w/6500 miles on it abt 18 months ago.
I've already put 10,000 more miles on it. It's a fun bike, I really love it, commute 25 miles to work nearly every day (that it doesn't rain)
I'm 61 and I'm from S. Calif.
Welcome to the site, lots of great folks and good information on here.

since we're here talking, '96-$1100 at 34000miles.  oil leaks everywhere, tensioner busted, guide busted....basically, now I feel I got screwed with all the work and ~$300 I put into it.  But I'm glad I found it all before I got stuck on the side of the road

Cheer up Grim,  $1100 still a good deal.
$300 in parts, I'll say $300 in labor for $1700 total.
The eduacation you got... priceless.   ;D
