Title: problems with petthingy
Post by Trippah on 04/11/07 at 16:26:59

I could really start to smell gasoline after 40 minute ride. Back at the house i noticed gas dripping ocasionally from rear leaft hand edge of tank.  Emptied it, removed it.  Took off the petthingy to remove tank.  After replacing the petthingy, put in some gas, couldn't find any leak...at least none so far.  the bad nesws was i droppedd the rubber washer from the speedo cable in under the generator/alternator.  Hmm, not ready for prime time yet.   maybe s jet blast of water will get it out for me.

I did not lose mine - first time I took tank off it did not even come out. second time I took off tank I fished it out of speedo cable & swapped it for a gromet of suitable size from local hardware store (True Value in my case), nipped up the nurled part of speed cable gently with pliers & have had no leak. maybe this will work for you?

ah yes the magic of that slot - anything you drop within 5feet is likely to end up in there - having fished many a thing out - step 1 is now to put a shop towel over the dang starter. - it pulls pretty easy - but still....

Remove 2 bolts for the starter.

Get the seal.

Put oil on o-ring, and gently wiggle starter back in place.

(optionally remove dead bugs and dirt from under starter before reinstall)

Replace 2 bolts for starter.

Replace seal in speedo cable.

Go online and buy manual at Amazon.

Go for ride ;D

;D LOL!! Had this exact same thing happen to me a couple of years ago! Yup, the starter pulls easily and yes there definitely will be a few mummified bugs under there!

Also, a good view of the drain hole, which produces the mystery oil leak by the front pulley if you cut the starter o-ring...gotta take a few extra seconds to lube that puppy :P

Here's a tip!  Slide a bookmark size slip of paper down the space and wiggle it from the from the pulley side to the speedo side and you will scoot that o-ring to a place where you can grab it with a forcep /roach clip.

Doesn't everyone have a roach clip in their toolbox?

That was one of my first tools...of course, now I might have a hard time finding it ;D

Greg,

You've left out a few steps at the end:

Notice leak at bottom of speedo cable.

Replace junk OEM seal with proper sized rubber o-ring.

Ride happily ever after!

Better use a nitrile o-ring.

I've lost mine a couple O times. I take an O-ring, last one was over an inch in diameter, & cut , at an angle, with dikes. Then I cut it down & use the same angle so the other end overlaps. Havent had a leak yet. It takes a few minutes, but the trick is to make it a few thousandths long, this sticks it in there when the ends press together & the ends pressing togerther seals the slice. With it being at an angle, not sure why I cut it at an angle, just felt right & I did it. All we need to make this work is an Oring long enough to do the job & a cross sectional area that is close to stock, & it doesnt have to be very close to make a new seal work just fine.
Oh, BTW, it does require a small screwdriver & maybe a scratch awl to make one go in & ovrlap right. Needlsnose are nice, too.

I wasn't aware that anyone actually tried my o-ring substitution :)

Anyway, thanks for the correction...

Now, that's just plain lazy.  You can't stop in at your local Ace Hardware and spend 15 cents?

Just kidding.  If it works, It works.

;D

I spent about $4 at Harbor Freight and got a box of several hundred nitrile o-rings of varying sizes.

That's why it is nicknamed the "Black Hole!" There is a gravity field around it that will suck in any free falling object.  ;)

Thanks all for your help and guidence- I gave up my roach clip in vietnam- 122 rockets make an interesting explosion when you are in the "right place."   Will get out there tomorrow before the next Spring time snow storm and get her cleaned up.  Serowbot- will try your method- I do have forceps..a benny from working with a MD.
As an aside- actually the beginning, I think it was the petthingy that was leaking..of all things, must have jarred it loose when removing the tank for the spacer mod.  Have put some fuel in, no leak yet- but will have to get  the above taken care of before a test drive.
Thanks again evryone. :D

Try turning the bike over and using anti-gravity to get it out, unless you have really really curved forceps.

An air hose and nozzle might be handy too...just cover your eyes from all the dead bug parts flying out ::)

Of course, in the time that it takes to write a reply, you could have removed the starter.  Ask Stinger, I removed his the other day :P
