I posted an earlier question about switching my original 2006 S40 muffler for a Harley 883 or perhaps another.
Someone replied about rejetting afterwards and what was my sea level.

I live at 100 feet above sea level so does anyone know what numbers I should tell the service guy about rejetting? I have no idea what any of this means.
I just want to tell the service guy something that makes sense.

I'd sure think 152.5 mainjet would do you right - are they also going to pull the brass plug and richen up the idle mixture(needs to be out about 1 3/4 <> 2 turns)? and of course the white spacer is a little think on the needle jet - needs to be sanded down to half it's thinkness or your liable to have 12ga shotgun type backfires

My recommendations would be the same as Reelthing's...

* 152.5 main jet
* 1/2 white spacer
* turn out slow mixture screw to get fastest idle - should be about 2 turns out.

You only need to be worried about elevation if you live at high altitude (1000s of feet above sea level).

Your bike will run great and get good gas mileage using Reelthing's recommended jetting.

There's also an aftermarket Dynojet jet kit available. This would be a bit different if you go with one of those kits.

I decided to order the Jardine muffler from the dealer.
They said that I do not need to rejet it. They actually say that nothing really needs to be done to the carb and that backfiring is just normal.

My backfiring is not little poofs, it sounds like a shotgun.

Should I insist on rejetting when I put the new Jardine slip-on on?

I would look for someone else to jet it. If you have to twist a mans arm to get him to do it, he may do a crappy job & insist the crappy results were predestined. He already said backfiring was normal. He isn't likely to work too hard to prove himself wrong. Grab a wrench & save a $$$.

if you are not comfortable doing it yourself then try to find friend who knows what they are doing & work with them to do it then you'll know in future.

agree with others - find another mechanic otherwsie - Savages do not have to backfire - I fixed mine & agree this guy should not mess with your bike & give you nonsense like this.

sorry -Bonnie - a postscript - if don't know friend who can help & want to tackle yourself then you are in right place to get advice - this crowd are super-helpful!

recommend buying a manual in which case - Clymers is fine & cheaper/easier to follow in many ways ex usual workshop one. can order it ex Amazon (don't forget to take free freight option to save $3.50 - me cheap!? :)

Oh my.....my head is swimming with all this great advice. I do have a friend who has worked on his bike but he seemed a bit nervous when it came to setting the carb.

I would like to be able to do things to the bike myself, I guess I'm just afraid I'll mess it up. But I suppose one has to learn new things sometimes.

My friend and I are going to put a Jardine (made for the S40) slip on muffler on the bike this weekend.

I have these recommendations from guys here on this site for my 2006 S40 once the muffler has been changed. What do you thing?

152.5 main
55 pilot
Idle mixture screw turned out 1/34 - 2
Remove 1/2 white spacer
Pray and hope for the best afterwards
Thing of the new bike you want when this one gets messed up beyond repair.
Just kidding on the last two....tee hee

suggest you leave the pilot jet as is unless you are out way over 2 turns on the mixture screw

get the phone book. Find a small independent shop, but not an HD specific shop. Got to the liquor store. Get a 6 or a 12 pack of some beer. Not fancy beer. Should fit in saddle bags, no problem. If the guys at the shop are all young, leave and find another. When you find a shop full of old timers who don't give you crap for having a "Jap bike," get them to do the work, and give them the beer as a trade to teach you how to do it. You will sitll have to apy the regular hourly rate...

I am not kidding. This will likely work.
