Title: Engine overhaul question
Post by grim on 03/23/07 at 01:33:53

Curious as to what "dies" after lots of mileage.  I had feeling it was the piston/cylinder?  Is there anything else that really wears out besides the usual clutch?  And would one fix the piston/cylinder or replace with another engine?

I have 34K miles and just wondering when the life of this motor is coming.

There have been a few that approached 100,000.  If you are taking care of everything along the way, watching the oil level and keeping it clean, not throwing dirt down the carb and that sort of thing, then you could very well double your current milage.  Watch for things like lose of compression from either rings or valves/valve guides.  If those things did start to loosen up and leak then a valve job on the head and maybe a bore and piston replacement could carry you on for another 30-40K or more.

You can get a compression tester that screws into the sparkplug hole. Crank the engine and read the pressure guage.

What would an engine do that was losing compression? Less power? Longer to start? Or quicker to start? Starter motor seems stronger than when it wasnew cuz the engine cranks over so easy? Can't eat a harley anymore? Doesn't accidently wheelie anymore? Losss of compression, burn oil? Easier to push in gear,, ohh for sure that ones true.
