Title: S40 Top Speed
Post by Sportster on 03/11/07 at 19:07:07

I hit 84 MPH today.  Is that about normal?

Well, that depends. How steep was the hill you were climbing & how much headwind were you facing?  8)

Just kiddin. Thats not an uncommon speed for th S40. Is it stock?how many Miles on it? What's the elevation there?

I believe the dealer played with the carb to try and get the lope out of it at 45-50 MPH, other than that it's stock.  I live almost at sea level, and it has about 750 miles on it.

Now that mine has about 2000 miles on it, I can hit 90mph on the freeway, but usually run 60-70.  Warmer temps should actually help you, even tho the engine can make a little more power when it's cold out (but doubt anyone would notice the difference, at least my "seat-o-the-pants meter" can't detect it...) ;D

Oh, I forgot to mention, my bike has the stock main jet, 145, stock intake and stock exhaust.  Although, I've got another exhaust of a Ninja 600 I'd like to try on for grins  ;D

The best I ever saw stock was about 88mph. Since I've been messing with it, it's been no better & often worse. I did recently discover the float was out of spec & pretty high, allowing a rich mix. I hope I get better top end this way & a lot better MPG. It's got to be better that the 30 to 35 I was getting.

This is not a lot less than the 883 Sportys I've owned.  They might do 92-94 mph.  They were shakin' so  bad the speedo was hard to read. ;D

The rubber mounted Sporty didn't shake much though.

The later 883s will do about 105mph stock.  I have a 2004 883 Custom that would cruise at 90 and easily exceed 100.  (Now its a 1200 and will do even better).  An newish 883 would easily blow away all but the most extremely tuned Savages for 0-60mph and any Savage for top speed.

I dont have an S40 yet so will this bike do 70-75 easily?  I drive a stretch of highway where I should be able to reach 70mph, so i at least need this bike to do 70 with no hesitation.

Yes, any properly tuned Savage will pull HARD past 70 MPH...

I ride the Los Angeles Freeway system -- I have to be able to do 85 to avoid being run over.  (J/K -- I can and usually do putt along in the slow lane at 75.)

my savage when not in pieces, would pull really hard through 85, and then i chickened out at 90. She still had more to go though.

mine will do an indicated 85 or so @ 4500 feet, throttle not screwed to the limit, but I don't go faster than 80 as, even with superbrace, it is a little light bike so concerned about road imperfections (& got to 55 years of age riding since 16 & not broke any bones yet so don't want to start now!) ;D
