Title: Not sure if the new pipe was worth it!!
Post by davedra on 03/06/07 at 20:53:20

I've posted before saying how stupid my stealership mechanic is.  (I guess I'm dumber since I need a mechanic)  Anyway, bought a screamin' eagle for the Savage, had it rejetted (took a couple of times) and it's run great for about 2 weeks.  As I was driving it home tonight, more flames shot out the back as I came to a stop.  (This happened originally and I thought the mechanic fixed it)   It also glowed red inside.

How the heck is this guy supposed to make it run without it catching on fire!!!!!!!

Flames?  Now that's Savage!

What actually has the mechanic been doing...jet sizes, etc?

Check for looseness in your exhaust system and header pipe. Until everything settles in (takes a bit of time) they will loosen.

If the carb was done right ??? it shouldn't go south.

Other possibilities - a failing petc0ck or vacuum leak at the carb mount.

For what you've paid the guy in labor I'll bet you could have about bought a decent tool set & done it yourself.

I would be at the machanics door when he opened up the shop and asking the question ... "I thought you told me that you had jetted this carb properly?  But the thing is shooting fire so something sure is not right, so how about fixing it and with no additional charge?!"
If he cannot jet a simple single cylinder with a simple carb then he has no business working in the shop as a mechanic.

Nothing wrong with a little flames huh Greg?  ;D Mine (with Dyna muffler) still belchs some every once in a while on deceleration, and it seems to change a bit with the weather.

However, If I was seeing cherry red in my pipes under 'normal' riding conditions, that might cause me some concern.

Yep, gotta know what he's been jacking with to guess where the problem might be...

It would be nice if the mechanic would tell you what he did.  There are certainly others here with screamin' eagle exhausts and they aren't running around on afterburner.

If he put a new aluminum exhaust ring on the head then it might be loose, mine did.
Let us know.

If You have SE II with the baffle and You are riding above 70mph for some extended distance, it is normal to have a red glow about 4-5" at night.
If it is an open pipe , You will see at night about 1' flame at 80-85mph.
If the bike was running good after the rejetting, I'd say that the mechanic did a good job picking the jets. About the flame that shot when comming to a stop- may be it will be better if You explain a little more about it- did You shut off the bike , or You just closed the trottle sharp, and what happened with the bike- did it die or it just resumed normal idle.
