Title: tank decal removal
Post by SavageRichie on 03/05/07 at 21:13:39

team,

best trick to remove the stock tank decals on a 99 savage.

Any suggestions on custom paint murals, sinister theme over original black paint.  Any one go there? Pricing?

Thanks

Richie

Traditional trick is....IF! they do not have clear coat over the top of them (wouldn't think they would spend the money on a savage to do that) then heat them with a hair drier and get under one corner and slowly lift and peel.

If they have clear over them then you need your paint guy to go down through the clear and remove them.

I'm pretty sure that they're clearcoated over. That's why mine is still on as of now  :-/

I know, I know...It's about personal choice, but I've never understood why people dislike the tank decals and want to remove them.

Now, the ones that I have no hesitation about removing are all those "motorcycles for dummies" safety stickers that are all over the bike.

For those the hairdryer is almost a required addition to any tool box :)

i took off the tank decal by heating with a hair dryer then using a razorblade to just get the corner of the decal up and peeled it off from there.
it did leave the outline from the clear coat and someday i swear i will use some rubbing compound to smooth it out.

I have an 05 s40 and I used the hair dryer method to get mine off. It did leave a little bit of residue from the sticker but, a little shot of WD-40 got rid of that. ;D

The best way that I've found, and it won't ruin the paint, is to apply "Goof-off" adhesive remover along with heat from a hair dryer.

The decal on the side of my tank is under the clearcoat.  I got all of the other stickers off.  Someday I'll get the bike repainted but until then it'll say: "Big single, Savage, Suzuki"!!!!!

1.  Drain the tank and remove it.

2.  Pull the speedo.

3.  Stuff a rag in the gas hole.

4.  Stack 2 bricks on top of each other lengthwise, place one brick lengthwise about 24 inches away.

5.  Sand crap out of logo.  Repeat.  Repeat.  Repeat.

6.  Place tank on brick painting stand.

7.  Shake crap out of rattle can.  Repeat.  Repeat.  Repeat.

8.  Lightly paint tank.  Wait 5 minutes.  Repeat.  Repeat.

9.  Put it all back together.

I bought the decal on/off kits from J&P's catalog and didn't think it was any better than the blow dryer trick. here's a link on decal themes you might be interested in

http://www.jpcycles.com/   type decal in the search field and select the style that interests you.
