Title: should i do the filter too?
Post by streece on 03/04/07 at 05:29:36

i have a 2000 savage and am in the process of doing alot of the mods mentioned in this site (by the way i think this site is awesome for info.) i've got screamin eagle's on the way, i'm gonna jet my carb and do the seat mod.  My question is should i do the k&n filter cone or do a stock k&n replacement?  My brother has a 650 v-star 07 model and man is he jealous because he is gonna spend 7-800 big ones to have the stealership put on pipes and rejet for him.  I love this site!!!!! thanks.

I suppose that the choice really depends on your energy level.

The K&N filter change is really one mod that has the least impact on overall performance.  It just gives you a little better flow going in, but the more important issue is the flow going out.

You'll see bigger results from the jetting and pipe changes...and you can save the "either/or" decision for last.

so, if i don't do the filter until later on.  Will it cause me to have to rejet agian or will there be no change?

The "hardest" part of the re-jet is getting the miderange correct via the thickness of the white spacer or needle replacement via a dynojet - the air filter flow should little or no effect - the mainjet might need to go up a size if you really free up the air intake - but it only takes 10 minutes to change a mainjet if you've put the carb back together right with stainless allen head's and stop to drink a beer.

Like ReelThang said, change those bowl screws to allen head.  Makes it so much easier.

You gotta remember that what goes in must go out...the biggest restriction is at the exhaust port.

Chances are that you'll have to experiment with jets a bit anyway....but I don't recommend you go as large as a 155 even with the Screamin Eagle.
