Title: Has anyone tried a Mikuni TM or TMX carb??
Post by smokin_blue on 02/22/07 at 10:34:05

Has anyone tried a Mikuni TM or TMX  smooth bore flat slide carb on their savage?  I am pondering many different aspects of my project and I got to thinking about the flat slide carbs rather than the older VM style.

any opinions?

I saw someone had a flat slide Klein on theirs...it was KLR650 or something...love to hear from you too.

Thanks

Paul

36mm VM ... $140 retail
36mm TM ... $200   "

Add in new rubber flange, assortment of pilot and main jets, and a new custom throttle cable for basic function & that will add another $80-90.

The TM has a little advantage in performance when it can be fully utilized.  On a stock or just lightly modified Savage engine you will probably not feel the difference.
I do not think the increased cost is worth it, that is why I use the VM in my carb kits.

In a highly modified engine the TM would be able to work more fully to its potential.  However, a VM with a Dial-a-jet & UFO will out perform the TM...espically in the low to midrange.

My carb on KLX is a keihin FCR41(flatslide pumper), to get the same valve carb ratio on the savage you would need to go for a 36mm flatslide.Highly recommended.

Not sure what I will due.  Before the entire project is over I am figuring a high flow custom stainless steel muffler, K&N filter, new carb (which one TBD), would like to flow and port the head, and raise the comp.

I grew up on the big 4 bangers and the flat slides were trick when you were spinning 11,000 rpm plus.

Like I said the VM will look for 1960ish but I supposed my 320mm full floating front rotor won't be so pure at that point either so why not a flat slide to go with it!!

Yes both mine, the top one is my SR500 project, the bottom one is my KLX650 supermoto and this is my old 350LC yam.

Very nice Clive, I can see we share some of the same blood.  When I get my personal website up I will post some links.  My first project was a sweet fully custom GT250 turned into a 330.  My last one was a radical full out GSX-R1100 based streetfighter.  My new one is going to be an ultra clean savage powered 60's style cafe bike.

Rock on!

PS: don't you just love the smell of two stroke exhaust in the morning?!

My first bike was a little 2 stroke.  That does make for sweet smelling memories.
I think when I am finished with it, my Savage will be a cafe racer/flat tracker cross breed of sort.

Lancer...what frame are you going with on your project?  I am assuming the savage frame?  I saw you were selling wheels..what rims are you going to?

I am using the Savage frame.  I really wish I could get a chrome-molly unit ... I have seen several at different websites ... but I do not have the money for anything like that.  They run in the $3-5k range, which is WAY OUT  of my budget.  Almost everything I am using is from ebay.  The wheels are Sportster mags from the early 90's, Ceriani forks, sporty disc with Nissin 2 piston caliper, replacing tank/seat/r fender, still configuring the rear.  I need the r. pulley and r. brake caliper.
Biggest question now is do I modify the stock swingarm for the sporty wheel or put a sporty swingarm on the frame.  We shall see.

We have had so many of our family die recently that I am way behind on the project.
We are preparing to sell our house as well and that is consuming a lot of time.
I may just try to buy another bike to ride for this season and work on the Savage as time is available throughout the year.

I NEED TO RIDE FOR MY MENTAL & EMOTIONAL HEALTH
