Title: Center Stand?
Post by noshow on 02/14/07 at 12:46:02

I start off saying I know very little about bikes. That being understood, I have a general question.

First off, a friend of mine has a bike with a center stand.

He uses it all the time for general maintenance or just basic cleanings. I love its function!

Do the make and after market or is it possible to add this to a S40 or Savage?

It's been discussed and I haver never seen one.  However, one could probably be made if you tried hard enough.

Would be really nice and could be done with a little welding and fab work.

The part that I'd be curious about is the "center" of the bike.  One thing that I've noticed when jacking the Savage is that the bike is lighter towards the front.  Jacking the bike with a frame mounted stand might bring the front wheel up and not the rear.

I think that's why so many people end up raising the bike with a jack under the muffler bracket rather than the engine part of the frame.

Didn't the older Beamers do that, too?

Get one of those motorcycle jacks from Pep-Boys. These work well.
The center stand framing will make this bike heavier. I bought my bike because I didn't have to deal with with all the weight. Light weight is one of the biggest advantages of the Savage.

Check out the Sporty Specialties website, they make a center stand for older Sportsters.

When I had my Yam 850, I used the center stand all the time.  Even for just parking.  It might also be handy for any road side repairs...

But if you only want to spend about $5, feel free to build yourself a "Poor Man's Bike Stand" :)

Perfect Idea for working in or around the garage.

Thanks for the tip and great pics.

Did you ever make the v for the front tire or did you just keep the proto type as is?

This would be nice if they weren't quite so proud of it.

These folks have some folding lifts a bit less expensive but also a bit less portable.  Check out their biker art gallery while you're on the site.

Naw, I kept it like it is.  A V-shape would make the tires sit at different elevations off the floor, so I just left it.  I have the bike standing in it right now...while taking the clutch out :o

I thought about getting the optional center stand on my 'Strom but decided on this swingarm stand instead:

I got the $40 one. W/shipping it was $55.52. Way cheaper than most I found online. Sturdy & works great.

Thanks! I have a 20x30 barn/shop that doesnt look quite that nice. Its a tad junky with the boat inside. Can't get away with that in the garage.

Unfortunately, every product has some kind of drawback over an OEM center stand.

Doesn't this stand require 2 people to get it up (no pun intended)?  But it is lighter than a jack.

A bike jack is heavy and, of course, you can't take it with you.  But it is good for cleaning and waxing.

Even my wooden one only allows you to work on one end at a time because of the straps.

But the OEM stand was around on my first one, and it's pretty hard to beat.  Just a shame they don't make 'em standard anymore.

Do you have any trouble balancing the Savage on that one?  Any trouble getting the frame solidly on the jack?

(I'm talking about that little triangle part that sticks down on the left side of the frame by the footpeg.)

Maybe your jack is narrower than mine was.

None at all. Next time I get it up, I'll snap a shot from the bottom.  :o

Real easy to do. You just put it under the swingarm & push down or stand on the handle & it lifts it up. Works best when I put a block of wood under the sidestand so it's closer to verticle when I lift.

Just position the jack, grab the handlebar and hold the bike up straight and operate the foot pump. Couldn't be simpler. I do wonder what will happen to the apparent perfect balance when I pull off a wheel. Might have to engineer a strap system like Greg's.

I'm still not sure I get it.  The swingarm stand goes in from behind the tire, you hold the bike up right AND push it down with your foot?  Don't know that I'm long enough or coordinated enough to do that.

BTW- If you want to take off the tire, then lower the bike until the tires are on the ground, loosen and remove the axle, then raise the bike enough to roll the wheel out.  The opposite tire will still be down on the ground.  You just don't want to drop off a tire with both wheels in the air :P

The jack that I had came with straps and stabilizer arms that swing out side to side.  The jack was just too wide for the frame.

I got a bike jack/lift from Sam's and it works quite well, along with straps from Harbor Freight.  I have to say that most of the time I use the "do-it-yourself" lift shown in this post in the Tech Ref forum (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=tech;action=display;num=1100379341).  It's easy and works well.  It's just too heavy to carry on the bike on a long road trip.  I will likely be looking into something else for that.  Either that or I'll just trust myself to be inventive should the situation warrant it.

That makes sense.

Try again. Position Jack; Hold Jack lever with right hand. Hold bike up with left hand and pump your foot to raise it up.

So Simple a Caveman Can Do it!

Wait a minute, are you talking about your jack or the swingarm jack?

That would be your jack.  I was talking about using the swingarm jack.  To me, that seems difficult for one person.

I know how to use your jack.

Even a Moron can do that :P

Then clearly we were talking about different things. I added a picture of what I was talking about, did you?  :P

Takes one to know one...

I didn't have to.  Mine are in the tech section and Babbalou posted a link, above.

Okay.  Now I see your reply...Thanks.

I just figured the stand would start lifting one side of the swingarm first, and it might get wobbly.

So what do you do, if you want to change the front tire?  The old "block under the frame" trick?  I guess that you could raise it with the swingarm jack, put a block under it, and take out the jack.

Wheww, I got off easy. The guy who built this place stuck a loft up in the garage that's stout enough to use for storage & still hang a come-along off of to hoist the bike. I use braided 1/2 nylon rope & it doesn't scuff anything. I've had the come-along for 25 years or so, I spose cost is effectively nothing. Portability is an issue..  ;)

This is the one I use. Note the scissors jack under the exhaust bracket. That way I can choise rear- or front-wheel off the floor.

Had to beef-up the green hose as it was not thick enough to clear the engine.

Yeah.  I used to live in a place that let me do that too :)

I guess you'd say that this is just MY problem, but this is why I can't use a jack under the muffler bracket.  Since it was more visible with the Raask, I tinkered with it :P
